Shaun Alexander, RB, Alabama
Height: 6-0 Weight: 205 Speed: 4.5

Profile by Tony Pauline of the TFY Draft Preview.

Alexander is having a tremendous season. Three times this year he has won honors as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week rushing for more than 100 yards in seven contests with three of those games topping the 200 yard mark.

He has elevated his draft ranking and is being given consideration as a mid-first round selection thanks to his senior campaign.

Combining many skills Alexander is a smart back that follows blocks and finds the hole. He runs with good forward lean, adjusts off the initial hit showing power in his running breaking tackles and picking up the extra yardage.

He puts his shoulders into defenders and falls forward when being tackled, something very important in short yardage situations.

An excellent receiver out of the backfield, Alexander catches the ball with his hands and runs well after the catch. Evidence of this is his average of 14 yards per catch including a 51-yard touchdown reception against Vanderbilt.

Though he takes a while getting to top gear Alexander shows good straight-line acceleration and open field speed. At times he has also shown to be a back that can handle the load and take a lot of carries.

A team player, he gives top effort when called upon to block and has come up with the big plays when they are needed most.

Not a back to "make something out of nothing" he is more of slasher and lacks the quick cutting ability or elusiveness to his running. He is not one that makes defenders miss nor does Alexander have the lateral speed that enables him to beat linebackers around the corner.

Many have been critical of the Tides leading rusher in the past claiming he lacked consistency and was more a flash in the pan then the real deal but that is starting to change.

Alexander leads the SEC with touchdowns (almost double that of the player closest to him), is number one of all non-quarterbacks in total offense as well as leading the league in rushing.

Had it not been for the ankle sprain that kept him on the sidelines much of the last two games Alexander's name would be right in the thick of the Heisman race.
