Jamaal Brimmer S UNLV 6’1 215
Jamaal Brimmer hasn’t just been one of the best safeties in college football over the past three seasons; he has been one of the best defensive players period. He burst on to the college football scene as a sophomore when he tallied 100 tackles, including an amazing 17 for loss. He added 3 forced fumbles and 5.5 sacks from his safety position as well that season. People really took note of that season, and he didn’t disappoint as a junior the following year. He had 77 tackles on the season, 10 for loss, 4 forced fumbles, 4 fumbles recovered, and 6 INT. He had the option of declaring for the draft, but returned for his senior campaign, and had another impressive season. He finished the year with 82 tackles with 6.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 1 INT. During his time at UNLV, Brimmer has racked up numerous post season honors including being a three-time All Mountain West Conference 1st teamer, two-time conference defensive player of the year, two time Thorpe candidate, and various All-American accolades.
Jamaal Brimmer is one of the more active safeties you will find in the game. He has a hand in everything; attacking the LOS to stop the run, dropping back in coverage, and he even gets after the passer on occasion. He sees plays develop quickly, and has awesome football instincts. He is best at moving forward, and he is a force in the run game. He will make you remember him with the hits he delivers, but he is also a sure tackler. Brimmer is just a great football player.
Jamaal Brimmer is not a premium prospect heading into the draft. He would have to have huge workout performances to hear his name called in the Top 40 of the draft, but I still think he is going to be a player at the next level. He isn’t your ideal athlete, but he is a great football player. He reminds me of Rodney Harrison based both on his style, but also because people did not think Harrison was athletic enough to be a difference maker in the NFL. Brimmer is going to make some team happy outside of the Top 40 of the draft. Exactly where he goes will be dictated by his workouts, but whoever takes him will be very happy he is left on the board.
