J.J. Arrington RB California 5’9 214
Coming seemingly out of nowhere as a senior, J.J. Arrington was arguably the best running back in the country last year. He backed up Adimchinobe Echemandu as a junior after transferring from the College of the Canyons, but still managed to run for 607 yards, catch 21 balls for 178 yards, and scored 8 total touchdowns. But it’s definitely his senior season that put him on NFL teams’ boards. This past season, Arrington ran for 2,018 yards and 15 touchdowns, while grabbing 21 balls for 121 yards.
J.J.’s best asset is his ability to hit the hole quickly. If there is an opening, he will get through it and pick up yardage. Once through the original line, he shows very good speed to break off long runs. He attacks the line of scrimmage, and runs with authority. He also shows good hands out of the backfield, and may have value as a 3rd down back.
Arrington appears to have what it takes to be a solid 3rd down and change of pace back, but he may be limited as an everydown back. He could be a star in Denver’s offense, but most other offenses don’t use the same blocking scheme to allow backs to produce like they do. If he is paired with a bigger back and can be kept fresh, Arrington could be a solid performer for someone. After an impressive showing at the combine, Arrington could hear his name called as early as the second round. He should be a safe bet to be taken on the first day of the draft.
