Brodrick Bunkley

NFL Draft News

Brodrick Bunkley DT 6'3 284 Florida St.
By: Robert Davis

Brodrick Bunkley has been on the verge of breaking out for a few years now. After a sophomore campaign in which he racked up 38 tackles, eight for loss, and 1.5 sacks, he was poised for a standout junior season. Injuries slowed him down all season and kept him from having any substantial impact. He came back at full strength this season and finally put together the season expected of him. On the year he totaled 66 tackles, an amazing 25 for loss, and nine sacks.

Bunkley is an excellent defensive tackle prospect. His combination of talent, toughness, and tenacity rivals any tackle in the draft. He is a very good athlete, and displays excellent quickness and closing speed once in the backfield. There aren't many 300lbers that move as well as he does. Bunkley is also very strong and uses his hands very well to keep lineman from driving him out of the play. Bunkley may bring the added versatility of being able to play in the 3-4 or 4-3 defense.

There isn't a whole lot to not like about Bunkley. He erased the doubt around his lack of bulk after checking in at 300lbs at the Senior Bowl. He has had some durability issues, suffering severe ankle and knee injuries during his career. Off the football field is where Bunkley's biggest problems lay. He was on the verge of being academically ineligible this season, and doesn't always put in the necessary work to get himself ready to play.

Brodrick Bunkley is a big time playmaking defensive tackle. His ability to penetrate and stuff the run or get to the passer is excellent. He isn't just a rusher though, as he shows the ability to hold his ground and keep lineman away from his body. Bunkley used his senior year to improve his stock as much as anyone. After his success on the field this season, he continued to rise up the charts with an excellent week in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. He bulked up to 300lbs and was a force all week in practice. He now ranks as one of the elite defenders in the draft, and has a chance to go very high in April.
