James Wyche DE 6'5 262 Syracuse
By: Robert Davis
Ever since he got onto the field for Syracuse, people were waiting for a breakout season. Through his first two seasons, it did not come. As a freshman, he had 40 tackles, 4.5 for loss, and 1.5 sacks. As a sophomore, he dipped to 37/4/2. Wyche began to come through as a junior though, posting career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks with 68/15/5.5. A monster season was expected as a senior, but Wyche again posted pedestrian numbers with 58 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and 4.5 sacks.
The big expectations were for a reason: Wyche has a lot of talent. He is a very good athlete, and shows the quickness and closing speed off the edge to be a difference maker as a pass rusher. He also flashes the strength to hold his ground, get off the block, and make the play. Wyche has solid size and has the frame to grow even bigger.
For whatever reason, he just never lived up to the level his talent suggested he should be. He lacked the consistency on a down to down and game to game basis, and disappeared at times.
Wyche is an active end that could be a force off the edge if he could just show more consistency. If a team can find a way to get all of his talent to shine through every down, they could have a steal on their hands, as Wyche only projects as a third or fourth rounder.
