Offensive Line
The offensive line needs revamping. Personnel losses in recent seasons, as well as an aging group of players, will force the Chiefs to look into draft day options to improve the talent here. When you consider that a Chiefs squad typically known for their rushing attack finished last in rushing yards per game, it’s evident that something has to be done to open lanes for backs like Larry Johnson. Offensive tackle Jake Long could be an option early in the first round, but if the team doesn’t draft him, they’ll need to get help somewhere along the way if they want the line to have success.
Cornerback
The cornerback spot had been effective because of Ty Law and Patrick Surtain, but both players are on the back end of their careers with Law being a free agent who may not return. Kansas City has to find youth to develop as they prepare for the future. The team may use the draft as an opportunity to fill some holes, but they might also be able to take advantage of a market that has corners potentially on the move. Whichever route the Chiefs take, they need to come away with relatively young talent to support Surtain and replace Law if he isn’t re-signed.
Wide Receiver
The wide receiver position in Kansas City will be led by Dwayne Bowe, who had a stellar rookie season for the Chiefs. After Bowe, however, there isn’t much in the way of proven talent. Devard Darling will be asked to play a role, but the team has to add more talent to a position lacking in depth and production after Bowe. If teams are able to focus more attention on Bowe because of a perceived lack of talent elsewhere, Bowe could suffer a sophomore slump.
