After a year as a backup, Fluellen became a starter on the Nole defensive line. In 2005, he had 26 tackles, 7.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks on the season. A year later, his numbers were almost identical. He had 28 tackles, eight for loss, with .5 sack on the year. Huge numbers were expected this year, but injuries derailed his season. He played in nine games, starting four, but finished with just 16 tackles, one for loss, and one sack.
Fluellen is a talented, versatile defensive lineman. He is a good athlete, with very good quickness. He has a quick first step and can gain penetration to disrupt the action. He has played different spots on the interior line, and may be able to play on the edge in the NFL. He may have the ability to play in the 3-4 along with a 4-3 alignment.
Size is the big issue with Fluellen. He is undersized for an interior lineman. He must get bigger to hold up at the point of attack against offensive lineman. If he is taken with the idea of playing end, he lacks the standout athleticism and closing speed to be a true playmaker off the edge.
Fluellen is a very good interior line prospect. That is his best position, but he will have to gain weight to live up to his potential. His true size may be the ultimate deciding factor in where he is selected in April. He will need a big post season to gain momentum leading up to the draft, because he was not able to improve his stock on the field because of an injury.
