Harwell began his career as a reserve defensive end in 2004, finishing the year with 22 tackles, 2.5 for loss. He shifted inside to defensive tackle as a sophomore, and had his best season to date, closing the year with 35 tackles, 11.5 for loss, and four sacks. He wasn’t quite as productive last year, finishing with 31 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and 1.5 sacks on the year.
Harwell is a player that can be a disruptive force in the backfield. He gets off the line quickly and can shoot the gap to break up plays before they get started. He is a good athlete, who can change direction and close to finish the play. He battles and plays hard on every snap, and will not be outworked.
If he does not get initial penetration, Harwell can have issues getting off blocks. He still needs to work on shedding blocks and holding his ground at the point of attack. Bigger, stronger lineman can move him around on the interior.
Harwell needs to develop more consistency inside after moving over from end. He is a player that can get into the backfield, but he really will not clog running lanes. If you are looking for a mid round tackle that can shoot the gap, he is a player that has some upside and is worth the risk.
