Savage began his career at the junior college level, starring at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His first season as a Cowboy was in 2006, and he ran for 820 yards and eight touchdowns in his debut season. As a senior this past year, Savage ran for 1,272 yards and nine touchdowns, while adding 259 yards and two touchdowns on 27 receptions.
Savage is an explosive threat out of the backfield. He has excellent quickness, and has the ability to make defenders miss. He hits the hole hard, accelerates very quickly, and has the speed to outrun defenders. He is a legitimate breakaway threat as a runner. Savage also became a threat as a receiver as a senior, which could make him a real weapon on offense. His natural talents should allow him to be a factor on special teams also.
Savage lacks the size and bulk to be an every down back. He does not run well enough between the tackles, and simply lacks the power to pick up yardage after contact.
Savage may lack the upside to be an every down back, but he has the playmaking ability to be a real weapon in the NFL. For a team looking for a compliment to a power back, Savage is a nice mid round possibility.
