Hefney had an impressive freshman campaign, finishing the year with 65 tackles and an interception as a corner. He moved over to safety as a sophomore and finished the year with 65 tackles and three picks on the year. As a junior last year, he had a breakout season, finishing with career highs of 96 tackles and five interceptions. As a senior, he finished with 88 tackles and an interception.
Hefney is a versatile defensive back prospect. He has experience at both safety and corner, and has played well at both positions. He has the quickness and speed to play corner, but also the toughness and aggressiveness to play safety. Hefney also shows very good ball skills as his 26 career pass breakups suggest. He also has experience returning punts, which may only enhance his value in the NFL.
As a safety, Hefney is undersized. He has average to below average size as a corner, but is very undersized as a safety. He may not be able to take on blocks as he approaches the line of scrimmage, and lacks the size to match up down the field with bigger receivers.
Even though most of his experience is at safety, some teams may view him as a corner because of his size. He has the talent to play either spot, but how he fits with each team will be different. The size is a tough think to overlook with Hefney and it will push him into the middle rounds of the draft.
