Torain spent his first two seasons at Butler Community College before transferring to Tempe. In his first season with the Sun Devils, he earned All Pac 10 2nd team honors after rushing for 1,229 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 205 yards and three touchdowns on 18 receptions as a receiver out of the backfield. Torain’s senior season came to an early end after a toe injury forced him to have surgery. He ran for 553 yards and five touchdowns in six games this season.
Torain is a versatile back that can help out in a few ways. He has good size, and is a tough interior runner. He attacks the line of scrimmage, does not go down on first contact and battles for extra yardage. He is also a solid receiver and a legitimate weapon out of the backfield.
Torain may lack the speed to turn the corner and break off big runs on a consistent basis, and he is not going to shake defenders in the open field. Those traits also may limit his ability to fully utilize his receiving ability.
Ryan Torain is a solid back, that gives you consistent effort and production. He may never be a playmaker, but he can play on Sundays and have an impact. Torain ran an average 4.64 at the combine, which should keep him as a second day prospect.
