Vaughn had a solid freshmans eason in 2005, finishing the year with 25 tackles, .5 for loss. He was again a backup in 2006, but saw more action and finished with 41 tackles, one for loss. As a junior he became a full time starter and came through with 100 tackles and a pick on the year. As a senior Vaughn had 87 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and two interceptions.
Strengths
Vaughn has great size and is a physical presence at safety. He does a good job reading the action and quickly attacks the line of scrimmage on runs plays. He is aggressive and is at his best making plays in front of him. Vaugh has the size, the toughness, and tackling ability to be a force near the line of scrimmage stopping the run. He’s a decent athlete and shows the ability to cover ground in coverage, so there is some potential in coverage as well.
Weaknesses
Vaughn is a run stopper first, and could have some issues in coverage at the NFL level. He does not change direction well, and that may cause problems when asked to cover one on one. He also lacks the recovery speed to make up for an mistakes he may make.
Future
Vaughn is a player that projects well to strong safety in the NFL for a team looking for a physical player that can play near the line of scrimmage. He probably won’t make many plays in coverage, but he is a guy that can hit and can tackle. His combine showing may have made him quite a bit of money, as he may have moved into third round territory. He had one of the best overall performances at the combine, running a 4.51 at 221 pounds and hitting the 37 inch mark in the vertical jump.
