Johnson began his Tiger career as a linebacker, where he played as a freshman before shifting to offense in 2006. The stable of backs at LSU during his career has limited his ability to touch the football. He had just one carry for six yards in 2006, then did not get a single carry as a junior in 2007. This year he did run for 28 yards and three scores and caught two passes for 33 yards.
Strengths
Johnson does the things that don’t show up in the box score. He is a very good lead blocker. He has tremendous bulk, power, and will drive defenders out of the way to clear a running lane for his back. He showed potential as a playmaker at the Senior Bowl. He was a load between the tackles and could be a valuable short yardage back in the NFL, and flashed some receiving ability as well. Johnson has a lot of experience on special teams, a trait that will definitely help him in the NFL.
Weaknesses
The rushing and receiving ability are not very developed. He didn’t get many opportunities to show them and shouldn’t be counted on to provide much in these areas initially in the NFL. He is a true lead blocker, and many teams don’t employ that any more, limiting his opportunities to find a team.
Future
Johnson has always been a quality blocker, but showed something extra at the senior bowl. He will not be drafted on his ability with the ball in his hands, but it is something that could come along and be an extra boost to the team that selects him for his blocking ability. He doesn’t play a glamorous position which places his stock as a mid to late day two guy, but he has the potential to make an impact in the NFL.
