Scout says Troy Smith will flop

According to Philly.com, Cincinnati Bengals' scout Greg Seamon called Troy Smith an overhyped Heisman-winning quarterback who would flop in the NFL.

"Really, he's not that fast," Seamon said of Smith. "He gets run down by defensive ends. He's not real big. He kind of stares down his targets. You didn't see those breathtaking, thread-the-needle throws [against Florida] that you'd hope to see from a top-of-the-draft quarterback."

C'mon man. One bad game as a starter and he is a flop.I'm not saying he's a top-flight prospect at QB. But if given an opportunity at the next level he will outperform Chris Leak, who will be drafted also. Somewhere in the 3-4 round range is about right.

Hey 11:25, do you know how to read or did you just stop after the first line? Last time I checked the Bengals scout isn't "some hack at philly.com." You sure are a smart one.

There appears to be some sort of bias against Troy. Why else would they post a link from some random scout calling him a bust?

Given that pro d-linemen are much faster than the average collegiate d-linemen, Smith is a dead duck. People look at Smith and see a slower, weaker-armed Vick. Harvey and Moss (UF's ends) are about as fast and big as the average lineman in the NFL. They simply harangued Smith. Scouts won't be impressed by this, whether it was one game alone or not.

This guy ain't Genius but I don't think Troy will be good at NFl level mainly cause he won't be able to see over offensive linemen. I like his ability to throw when out of pocket, but other than that i don't really like him,I wish him best in NFl

Yes, he was a great disappointment at the BCS championship game. He was slow and didn't make great decisions. Smith's passes were off target... he will be a flop at the next level. Maybe the weeks off before the title game affected him. If so, that shows a lack of maturity. Seeing Smith at the combines would be interested. Wish I could go.

1. The Florida DE's teed off on OSU's line. OSU got totally out coached in the championship. When the D-lineman line up a yard outside the tight end and rushes up field around the offensive tackles in less than 2 seconds, it is up to the coaching staff to call a SCREEN PASS or DRAW!

2. The championship hurt OSU's line prospects namely Alex Boone and Kirk Barton more than it hurt Troy Smith. I don't care who the QB is Vince Young, Troy Smith, Michael Vick or Donvan McNabb if your line doesn't block you can't throw.

3. OSU's line height
Boone 6'7'' Rehring 6'8'' Datish 6'4'' TJ Downing 6'4'' Barton 6'6''. He still saw enough to win the Heisman.

4. Perhaps the Bungels scout would like Troy Smith more if he got arrested some. Maybe he needs to sprinkle in DUI, a gun charge or push his Grandma down the stairs. If Troy does any of those you know that he will shoot up the Bungels draft board. hahaha

There are always gonna be haters out there in the world. Florida has a fast defense, bottom line. Most overlooked that fact in the championship game. Heck these guys played in the SEC, probably the best football conf in the NCAA. Troy will be fine in the NFL and with a good line he won't have to outrun d-lineman all the time, and who wants their QB to thread the needle anyway. I would prefer mine to throw to the open guy.

There are thirty-two teams in the NFL and many scouts per team. This is the opinion of just one scout. The Bumgals have tracked record of choosing "convicts" and "busts", his opinion of Troy doesn't carry much weight>

Anyone who says Troy Smith won't be able to see over an NFL oline needs to get their heads out of their asses. The OSU line was HUGE, average height over around 6-4. Programs like OSU and UF and USC all have NFL sized linemen because thats where NFL linemen come from.

smith was arrested once for beating up his girlfriend. smith is too short at 6'1, doesn't have an outstanding arm and heisman trophy winning qbs who were scramblers(Andre Ware, Eric Crouch) have had little success in the NFL his is a 4-5 rounder and a backup at best

This is a good point. Most NFL scouts are not talking Smith as a first rounder. Drew Brees is very good at finding passing lanes. Smith is always bootleging or dropping way to far back. Typical, more success for the scrambling back in college than in the pros.

Troy would be awesome on the bengals. He knows how to get the ball around to different recevers. And with Johnson (chad) as his Tedd Ginn and TJ Hushmanzada as his Gonzo he will be better than Carson Palmer!!!

As much as Troy Smith defenders want to hate on this scouts comment, his comments carries much more wieght than mine, yours or anyones on this site. He gets paid for his insight, and guess what? We don't. So if your asking who is this guy? Or who hires people like this? Well, the NFL hires people like this. The Bengals hire people like this. Regardless of the character issues the Bengal prospects have had, their prospects have been some of the most productive in the NFL. So apparently this scout has some serious clout and knows how to do his job. And for us to argue with him is just non sense. To argue with someone who actually gets paid for something we would all basically kill for, to have the ability to scout and draft real players, is ludicris. Instead of bashing this guy maybe we should take what he says into considration. So that hack, or moron, or nobody you guys are all talking about is all more of a somebody than all of us in this business. So relax.

It's not fair to judge Troy based on one game. Many great players have had at least one bad game. Perhaps Bengals have many players who never had one bad game. But it's hard to play a professional game of football in a prison.

yeah troy smith had a terrible game in the bcs championship, but who on OSU did. everyone says he is too short, but if he gets put in the right system he can be a good nfl qb (look at drew brees). if this scout actually watched him play throughout his career at OSU, he would see that troy became more of a pocket style passer his senior season and not the vick type qb where he looked to run first throw second like he was his soph and junior season. Its easy to judge a qb when you are a bengals scout and palmer fell into your lap when you have the number one pick. maybe this guy should stop bailing his scouted players out of jail and start looking at game film instead of just watching the games on primetime tv. some of the picks this guy has made should prove what a great judge of talent and character he is.

Troy Smith is still a serious athlete. Granted he will most likely not be a starting quarterback on the NFL level; however, he still has the physicality and drive to make an impact on a football team. Remember OSU recruited Smith as an overall athlete, not solely as QB.

That one game showed the true colors of that Ohio State team...a fluke and a recipient of a Big Ten scrub schedule. Yeah Yeah Michigan and Wisconsin. Michigan was romped by USC and Wisconsin stole one from Arkansas. Troy Smith won the Heisman thanks to the scrubs of the Big Ten. All I heard the week before the Championship game was their vaunted defense and how it will shut down a no name Florida offense. Thanks for the candy kiddies. You can tell the voters and the geniuses that set the parameters of the BCS computer are mainly from the Big Ten as Ohio State somehow stayed at #2 after that spanking. LSU and USC spank Ohio State too and dont bet against Boise State.

Troy Smith is not a scrambler. I don't know if you saw any OSU games this year, but he stayed in the pocket pretty much all the time. Bottom line on him is a good kid with solid work ethic that may not have the measurables or mind to be a great NFL QB.

I suppose if Jordan Palmer was 5'11 or 6'0 he would be the exception to Seamon's rule? At his best, Troy Smith can overcome his height disadvantage, real or perceived. At worst, I doubt you'll see his name on anyone's police blotter, unlike quite a few of Cincinnati's players. The opinion of a scout from Cincinnati doesn't impress me much these days.

troy is going to be a great qb @ the next level 1 loss can't justify a mans potential in the NFL look @ drew brees in the rose bowl, or the heisman boys from USC.I don't trust no scouts over my own eyes I seen smith play he's got it. The same scouts who judged and gave the herb light on the quarterbacks to go in the 1st round cade mcnown, Tim couch, Todd marinovich Ryan leaf the list goes on and on.even brees had a couple horrible years, thats why they drafted rivers, before he became a solid qb. I say if anything smith will stay home with Cleveland in the second round with his partner ginn Going in the 1st round.that was just wrong for that scout to say that. You get one draft pick right out of many now your opinion counts. Yeah right.

All im saying is this "scout" is paying to much attention to one game. Its not like florida is the only good team they played all season. OSU had one of the toughest schedules this year, and troy smith took care of business.

hes not tht fast... hes pritty fast to be a quarterback. jeese, what does this guy want. Hes faster than most of the quarterbacks coming out of this draft. and he has a cannon with pritty good accuracy on the deep ball.

I see troy going in the second or early third, nothing later.

Is there any chance this scout was just refuring to the UF game because that was the best deffence he went against all year? I think what he ment was againts northwestern he looked good, but against real talent he was exposed as a good college QB, not pro QB. hey I'm a troy smith fan (no i don't go the THE Ohio State) but lets be honest, he will most likly not workout in the NFL.

Yea Troy Smith will bust and Ki-Jana Carter will be the next Jim Brown oh and that Akili Smith guy, he's the next Jonh Elway. Carter and Smith are two of the biggest draft busts in recent memory and ONE Bengals scout is going to sit there and tell me that Troy Smith is going to flop. Here's an idea, how about we wait and see. I'm not saying he is going to be some great QB but call me crazy I'd like to give the guy a chance before I label him a bust. I guess some in Cincy are not willing to do so. I'm sure every scout in America also said Tom Brady would be a lifetime backup being a 6th round pick. My point is you never know how someone will translate into the pros so it's downright stupid to say someone will be a bust even before the combine.

The person that published this is an idiot. he has one bad game and this guy completely gives up on him. He sounds like one of those guys that doent stick with one team and jumps on the band wagon of what hot. I bet this is the same guy that put down Drew Brees and is now singing his praises. I hate Ohio State, but I cant hate on talent. This guy has just as much talent as any QB coming out this year.

One of the most important qualities of a quarterback is his intangibles. Some great athletes are selected in the first round with undisputable upside and settle into relative obscurity after a few years. The best football players make themselves great through hard work and determination. This is what Troy Smith has done at Ohio, and before he can be judged at the NFL level he must be given a chance to compete at it.

Well, for all you OSU fans who have so kindly posted thus far: Troy Smith is not the God you all worship. Face it, the BCS championship game (although not by any means a testament to his collegiate career) was very telling. Troy smith played very badly in a game that really mattered. This shows his ability (or lack thereof) to play under pressure. And for those who claim that his "number 1 weapon" got hurt on the first play: Teddy Ginn had what? 780 yards and 9 TD's? Not much of a weapon, even IF his stats lead the team. Troy smith lacks what all the other draft potentials have, and those are distinguishing characteristics. Name one thing that no other quarterback in the NCAA doesn't have. Size? God no. An arm? Puh-leeze. Speed? Not enough to escape the DLine of Florida. Heart? He demonstrated that against Florida. A Heisman? Sure, thats one thing. But weren't Jason White and Chris Weinke Heisman trophy winners? Where are they now?

As for the comments about the Bengals and their felonious roster...well...They're better than the browns

I think Smith can play some Doug Flutie football if you ask me. He may be small but i saw a fact that 70% of pro-bowlers were drafted in teh second round or higher. PLUS who is this to talk. He obviously has a rough time with talent considering half of his team is a bunch of felons, with obviously not much playoff talent. I may not be an expert but you obviously aren't one either.

Troy Smith demonstrated his ability against lesser opponents, but when he finally played one of the big boys, Florida of the SEC, he and his team were exposed as the pretenders they are. If OH State can't hack it against the SEC what do they think will happen in the NFL?

Well I have read many comments here today and now here is my take on Troy Smith he is an alsome qb.I have watched many games that he was a successful leader and destroyed his opposing team like they were pee-wee so don't worry about his height he's a fully growen adult not pre-teen.As for the scout's comment well I didn't see the bengal's in the Super bowl I'm glad I don't pay this man or I would ask for a sal. cut until well he's human and make mistakes too right!!

Here's my opinion: Lets just wait and see how all of these guys pan out in the NFL over the next five years or so. At least give them that much. I'm only 23 and I know most of them are still kids inside, to a certain degree. Hard work and more developing maturity in the coming years will (hopefully) make all of these draft prospects great players. And if not, I hope it makes them upstanding and wonderful young men.

Good luck to Troy and the rest of the 2007 NFL Draft class.
