Im torn because the older players AREN'T rich and they are the ones suffering right now. The younger players are being "protected" better and get paid significantly more. The problem is how do you prove the NFL was neglectful in 1980 and where does it end? Will every single player with memory loss or headaches get a chance to sue the NFL?

And do not be naive, they knew the risks back then, they do it for the glory and the spotlight......

Based on the economic standards at the time, those in the 80's were not making chicken feed. The big difference is that the players today are making ridiculous money, not just good like times past.

I generally lean towards things like this being the players decision. Sure, we didn't know as much about concussions back then but, it's not hard to figure that bad things might happen at some point in their lives if they continually get cracked in the head and can't remember their names. THAT is not rocket science.

I also feel that if he is going to try and sue someone(not that I agree at all with the premise) he should be looking at his former team, as they are the ones that allowed him to continue playing. As for those saying that he wasn't in his right mind to make such decisions....what about the days right after he was fully aware? He didn't sue then. Nor did he think enough about it in the last 30 years. Why now? To me, I agree with those that see this as a money grab. Right or wrong, it sure appears that way.

Even with the knowledge that is available now, there are no shortages of players lining up to get into the NFL, new rules or not. It IS a choice and they chose not to be a construction worker or dog walker. I find it hypocritical to live the life and then [inappropriate/removed] about it when it's over.

Good question.

32 NFL teams together have deeper pockets than 1 NFL team.

Sure this could be seen as a reason that Goddell hands out fines...but they are getting paid millions of dollars to play football. They know the risks going into it.

I agree with you to a point. Still I don't think anyone should be suffering from memory loss when they retire. If handing out fines reduces this then I'll be happy.

Apparently even more players are suing the NFL now. Mostly former Saints no big names but still pretty important news.

Quote:
Several former New Orleans Saints players, including John Fourcade, are among the 11 ex-players named as plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit filed Friday in federal court in New Orleans. The lawsuit says each of them has developed mental or physical problems from concussions or concussion-like symptoms

It's a difficult situation for everyone and it's really unfortunate the issue wasn't resolved during collective bargaining.

The issue is going to boil down to what the NFL knew about concussions and when they knew it. Regardless of how people feel about the issue the NFL as the employer is obligated to take steps to protect it's employee's, as best they can.

Unfortunately not much was known about concussions and long term effects the past five years. Research has now taken off and we get more information all the time.

Undoubtedly. I understand the logistics. It just seems blatantly opportunistic.

Is it opportunistic in terms of money or is it more opportunistic in terms of getting attention to serious issues that need to be discussed and handled when it comes to retired players and their mental health post careers?
