|
|
|
It seems every year we as Saints fans try to predict and assume what players our beloved Saints will target in free agency and what our needs and weaknesses truly are. Over the past few seasons it has always started and ended with upgrading the defensive unit and its obvious why.
The thing is, it seems Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton always throws us a curveball we never saw coming. I for one would have never thought we’d be in the market for a guy like Darren Sproles last offseason but these unexpected signings happen to be more of the norm these days in Nawlins.
So I ask you… Who in your opinion do you see the Saints secretly targeting this offseason in free agency?
My choice is,
Curtis Lofton MLB Atlanta Falcons
Does anyone else on here think it’s finally time for the Saints to steal one from the Falcons instead of the other way around? Jonathan Vilma’s knees have shortened his career and his departure is simply good business, nothing more. Lofton is a young up and coming MLB who is in his prime. The Falcons are set to franchise Brett Grimes and have stated they won’t overpay Lofton to keep him. They are comfortable allowing Lofton to walk and insert Akeem Dent as their starting MLB.
The reason for this is simple… MONEY!
Lofton is sure to ask for more than what the Falcons are willing to spend, enter the Saints. MLB is clearly a need this offseason. The word around town since Spags arrived is they would like to keep Dunbar on the strong side and Casillas on the weak. Spagnuolo has always had a hybrid that he utilized as a Joker player he lined up everywhere on defense to create mismatches and that’s where Martez Wilson will come in. Lofton would solidify the group! The interest is Lofa Tatupu to me is simply a decoy (which is a tactic this regime has used in the past) to throw the sent off their true target.
Landing Lofton in FA would give the Saints a very young but talented line backing core and allow us to focus solely on the front four in either the draft or our trade (Osi Umenyiora) this offseason. Sure this signing will come at a price but this would be an investment well worth it and something I can absolutely see happening!
What do you see?

OLB Anthony Spencer Cowboys.
We wanted him coming out of the draft, when he was a DE from Purdue.
He's been a bit of a failure as a 3-4 OLB, but as a DE, he'd have more success. His athleticism and overall play style fits in with a Spags based D. He'd have to put on more weight, but if by chance we do cut/trade Will Smith for cap space, I think he will be signed to add a veteran presence at DE who can do everything. _________________

LOL, really? He's twice as good as all the LBs on the Saints roster COMBINED! Not sure where you're going with this one NSF, the guy is a tackling machine. He probably had more tackles than all the Saints LBs combined as well. It's not like he's Roman Harper bad in coverage.....
I'm with you on this one Worm. I'd love to see Lofton in black and gold. I'm tired of the same crap the Saints keep serving up at the LB position. _________________

You forget the contribution of leadership and intelligence that Vilma provides. Yes, he needs to be replaced, but not shown the door. Vilma will end up as a coach in the NFL one day, mark my words. The key is develop players while finding an occasional FA gem. I do hope Martez Wilson can emerge at SLB this year. I do think we should look hard for another LB in round three as we did last year. Sean Spence, WLB, may be available due to a less than insipring combine performance. I like Spence for his instincts and Spence idolizes Vilma. That could be a good fit. There are other attractive options, but I am not overly impressed with Lofton. He is good, but may have an inflated opinion of his $ value. We will see.
Actually, I do see the possibility of losing Colston and Nicks, as well as Porter. If that occurs, look for the Saints to trade up in the first or second round with the Patriots to secure a potential starter at guard. This year there are worthy candidates available. And, the Pats have no pick after the fourth round this year. |
