I can agree that overall, we don't look like a team that has the talent to take them to the Superbowl, but you still need to stay competitive. Anything could happen, I guess. I'd go nuts if we won the Superbowl next year with the current talent on the team.

I feel like we've laid down our foundation talent wise. We have a young QB, a star Runningback, 2 huge Tightends with a strong pass rush on Defense (and a solid Special Teams I think).

2 years into the future may look much more realistic, but at the same time, why not try to put together a few piece NOW, and still use the Draft?

My belief is that if you don't use every avenue to find ways to better your team, eventually things will start crashing down and it won't look good.

While I certainly believe we really need to have a strong draft this year, we've ignored FA so far except for grabbing our "other" starting Tight End, and a Defensive Back whom we never heard of. I know of Frazier's/Spielman's philosophy of waiting out to find the right guy, but I think some of those "right guys" were open in the beginning days of FA and we still looked past it...

I've always preached patience to people. However, I don't think you should be so patient that you miss a bunch of great oppurtunities and end up shotting yourself in the foot for doing so. Laughing

What great opportunities were those? We don't know if any of those "great opportunities" wanted to come here or not. How much more do you think Grubbs would've asked for to come to come to the 4th best team in the toughest division in football?

We didn't/don't have enough cap space to get into bidding wars over guys that were going to be high-priced to begin with. We could have offered Vincent Jackson the same deal Tampa did, but they had the cap room to counter and make an even larger offer. Would you really give Pierre Garcon 40+ million? I'm sure we will get some decent second and third-wave guys that will contribute and help to lay a foundation, but as far as making the big splash, that was likely never in the cards.

I think the front office will be pretty tight pocketed for the next year or two. Like Spielman has said, we aren't one or two players away from a super bowl. While there were some amazing talents in FA this year, and any one of them would have been an awesome upgrade, it would have only done so much. Think of it as putting 22" rims on a 1995 ford tempo... cool rims, but your ride is still garbage. We are taking a slow roll, investment sort of approach, we are going to make some mid tier, cheaper signings in FA, and attempt to have solid, progressively building drafts, where all the players we bring in are cheap, but develop into solid starters. Once we start to hit on a good amount of those guys, and we see legit progress in our team's record, then yea, we will go ahead and make some larger buys in key areas. A team of solid players can win by playing sound football. Once we are solid, if we add a few awesome talents, then yea, you can become fearsome and dominant.

As a fan who wants to watch every game and enjoy and be proud of his team, these next years are going to be painful. In the end, I think and hope that I will be proud of the process, because the Vikings will be a much more sound and effective team because of this.

Well, they can't have tight pockets next year because every team has to spend 95% of there cap money. And the following year, that number goes to 99%..

Yes, agreed and I understand this. I believe that they are just trying to stave off the need to spend that much money on guys until next year, that way their contracts will carry them further into our rebuilt years. I think a decent hunk of that money next year will also go to resigning guys
