Schwartz would be an excellent pickup, one of those low key signings that could really help this team out. I think he would be the RG, that would be my guess. Schwartz is young, big, powerful and the Panthers have always had exceptional running attacks. I like the potential fit here at RG, and an emergency RT in case Loadholt stinks or is injured.
If MN can get Schwartz at RG, to go with Johnson at LG, or maybe one of the young guys can step up (Love or Fusco), I like the interior line for 2012, even without the draft.
So Schwartz is coming to SF next, I wish there was something i could do to pitch the Vikings and make myself useful  |

This may have been true for the LT position 10 years ago, but it does not reflect the new realities of todays NFL.
Rules that protect the QB in terms of flags thrown for penalties and rules that further allow the WRs to get open quicker reduces the value of LTs in todays NFL. No touching recievers after 5 yards, and jump balls with some contact where flags get thrown all help the QB be able to get that ball out of his hands faster then before. |

Purplexing . . . sorry, been away from the forum, actually busy at work. In my post about getting Jake Long from Miami . . . I would do that trade, under two conditions: 1. Miami would have to give up a 2nd rnd pick too. 2.) The kicker would be Long would have to re-structure his rookie contract which was enormous, if I recall.
I doubt it would work, but it was sure a different slant . . . lol. I would have to wonder how wacked-out the Dolphins front office would be to trade up for Tannehill. Would it be sensible that he isn't picked prior to #8? |

I would agree that very good receivers are going to help an offense and we are lacking an awesome outside #1 receiver - Jenkins, when healthy is a mid-low level starter I think most would agree.
But when we've looking at draft value the best LT is higher than all but the very very best WR/CBs.
I'll posit a scenario - we draft Kalil at #3 this year and go 8-8.
Next year we draft 14-16 range
We can likely pick up a top WR/CB in that range next year.
Alternatively...
We draft WR/CB at #3 this year and go 8-8
Next year we draft 14-16 range
We still need a franchise OT but we can't get one... but we could get an awesome OLB like Greenway, slot WR like Harvin, 4th Best QB, 3 best DE, a great RT but we still have a Charlie Johnson or his ilk at LT.
Just like if we'd been at #1 we'd have taken Luck and rebuilt the franchise around him, when you have the (mis)fortune to pick this high, you need to grab the kinda players that you don't find out of the Top 5 picks... the premium QB, LT, DEs... |

Going 8-8 would be the high side of predicitions with either a LT, CB or WR taken in the 1st round.
You arguement is based upon the notion that we need a Franchise LT to be successful in the future, I think we only need an average one to be successful in the future. |

Your argument is based upon the notion that there is but one target, being 'successful', and that you only need an average tackle to be that, thus any tackle better than average doesn't help you towards that goal, and is a waste of resources.
It seems obvious to me that both notions are false, you don't need a franchise LT to be successful, and there is a big difference between having a serviceable tackle or a great tackle.
The question should be: given where this team is now, and where we want to be, what player constitutes the more prudent long-term investment?

What about them.
A guy who has never played in the NFL, who got passed over by scouts numerous times.
And Brinkley, someone coming off a major injury, who was a 5th round pick. Even so, 2 MLBs is still selling yourself short in terms of what you need for the season. Teams generally carry 6-7 LBs. MN has what, 4 under contract (Dean/Greenway/Elimimian/Brinkley). |
