Considering he was one of the few players who never gave up last season, I'd keep him... unless it's a deal we can't refuse.

Why?

Why cant Allen be in the long haul as well (as in the next 5 years)?

How can you expect to develop quality young CBs, if you dont have a pass rusher like allen. Allen provides instant pass rush, will make the young DBs and Dlineman around him play better and develop, and can be the veteran leader.

It just sends a terrible message trading Allen, especially for the fans who are unable to grasp that the team is rebuilding. (a majority of the fans not on this forum probably dont want to admit so as playoffs are probably the only thing on their mind, hence why there seems to be so many irritated Viking fans outside this forum for not signing big name free agents). That majority will have a great determination in whether a stadium bill holds up, its terrible timing and really, not practical. If Allen can play good football for another 5-7 years (why doubt him, many HOF DEs have that kind of shelf life), i see his impact just as worthy as a first round picks. MN isnt in a difficult cap situation, Allen isnt a hindrance on the roster

VR isn't Allen a FA after next year? Why the heck would he resign here if we're not on the verge of a title? Think about that real hard. It's the whole Dwight Howard scenario but in Minnesota.

So trade him now, while you can. While his stock is at it's highest and he's still yours. Allen hates playing at the Metro dome as well, he has gone on record as to calling it a dump.

So please don't act like it's a crazy idea. You have to think ahead like a game of chess.

He signed a 6 year contract in 2008. So he is here in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Three more years.

Oh ok, then my bad. I regress. I thought he was a FA after next season.

Never mind, he is a FA after this season. Look at you having me question myself. Laughing

He wont come back to Minnesota if he hits the market. A team like NE would snag him up quicker then we could call him.

Jared Allen makes over $11.5M this season and $14.2M in 2013...then, he hits free agency. I suspect that, if the team makes enough progress this season, he'll extend the contract for another 3-4 years, which might take him to age 35. But, then again, they might let him walk since he'll be 31/32 at the end of the contract.

Every player is a free agent every year.

If the vikings cut him now, his salary (less some dead money) comes off the books. So, in effect, they are deciding to sign him for $11.5MM this year, and $14.2MM next year.

You all argued signing CBs and OGs and WRs that are young, but expensive, was a bad idea. Why is signing (in effect) Allen a good idea?

IF this is really a 3-5 year rebuilding project, now is the time to trade him.

I don't agree that it has to take 5 years, but if you refuse to sign impact starters in FA, it will likely take that long.

It's easy to say "terrible idea", but that statement is not consistent with your statements about not bringing in other FAs for big money. It just is not logically consistent.

So, if you could get a younger starter and a first round pick for him, why would you not do that?

btw, I think you could get more than the vikings gave up, as he's been sober for the whole time he's been here, and he's been great too.

The only big name free agents i was on board with was Nick, Grubbs and Carr. Carr is 25, Nicks is 27, Grubbs is 28. Age isnt an issue for Olineman, usually never is and they go strong until there mid 30s.

And i dont agree with this being a five year rebuild. What I mean by five years is when MN hits its stride as a contender (if it ever does). It could take 1-2 years to become competitive again, or a fringe wild card team, if the draft goes MNs way.

And yet, nearly everyone here said signing an OL was a bad idea....

I argued that signing those positions from outside the organization is a bad idea (really, just not preferable to drafting them), I said nothing about a situation like Allen. He's already been productive, and is a known commodity, within this system.

I am always hesitant about trying to fix problems with expensive solutions from free agency. It can work (like Antoine Winfield and Steve Hutchinson), but far more often, it doesn't (Bernard Berrian, Marcus Robinson, Maurice Hicks, Madieu Williams, Karl Paymahrent, Lito Sheppard for examples).

If they've been productive in this system, I'm far more willing to re-sign them. However, while I'm not opposed to letting Allen walk after 2013, I'm certainly not in favor of trading him now, because you don't cut off your nose to spite your face. They're never going to get fair value in return for him, so use him for his production now, as well as any leadership he can provide for the future.

The one thing this locker-room missed more than anything last year was Phat Pat's leadership. So, they need someone else to step it up to replace him. The closest they have to that now is Jared Allen and Antoine Winfield (Kevin Williams has never been a loud person, so I don't really expect it from him).

When you look at the history of top DEs going someplace and making a difference I can think of a few:
1. Reggie White to GB
2. Neil Smith to Denver
3. Julius Peppers to Chicago
4. Jared Allen to the Vikes.

If people want to dispute Jared's worth/value, I think he's worth every cent of $15 million a year. Why? He keeps himself in pristine shape, he's dynamic on and off the field, and when the team was at the bottom of the valley of crap, he remained a stalwart competitor and against teams that ran the ball effectively and while fighting through chips and doubles every other play, he still racked up 22 sacks - and that's a wedge of what he actually produced.

That's more than just understanding coaching and playing a position - he's a force on a whole other plane, and this team NEEDS that, especially with Adrian going down.

Granted he can't do it all by himselft, but he's the rigth guy to yell "Charge!!!"

That said, find a trade in excess the magnitude of what the Vikes paid for Hershel and I'd consider it from a business standpoint . . . otherwise, it's good talk in dull times . . . Rolling Eyes

The bigger question is, who do you replace Allen with? 4-3 De is one of the hardest positions to draft and the picks your trading Allen for, your likely just going to be using on a DE that will be know where near as impactful as Allen is right now and over the next 5+ years (i dont buy that he wouldnt resign with the team if they are showing progress).

Hoping for the Lebron James hometown loyalty? Couple points:
1. Lebron didn't sign at home.
2. This isn't Jared's home.
3. The head coach he came here for is gone.
4. Les Frazier is very unlikely to be the coach in 2013 as Vikings fans are nothing if not impatient.

Soooo, most every one he knows will be gone (including players like ray edwards Kwill, & Phat) & he doesn't live here, but we assume Jared Allen likes the weather & will stay? Laughing

I'd want more than 2 1sts, as he can get a decent team a championship.

your not getting more than 2 first round picks for Allen, the only position right now that commands two first round picks is the QB position.

right. not now. wait for a market to develop before the trade deadline whether that's camp or whatever. need to trade when some team has "hope" whether that's camp or after an injury. I'd just want a whole lot for him or I'd keep him & hope like you do we can resign him.

What about pairing everson Griffen with Robison ? I do not think that is better pairing than Allen and Robison but it is a viable option. The other point here is they are looking for more playing time for Everson.

I am only in favor of a trade if we get 4 very high round picks. A 1st and third this year and next year sounds about right.
