I wouldn't mind seeing Patrick Willis on the cover, he's a damn fine player (unlike Hillis) but he's probably someone that the casual fan has no earthly idea who he is since the 49ers were invisible until last year and he plays an unglamorous position (i.e. he doesn't score touchdowns, ESPN doesn't talk about him all the time.) |
That's true, and I have been voting for him. However, he's the kind of player that true football fans will recognize and celebrate to be on the cover. EA may be proud to put him on their cover, knowing that he is a better football player than the media would like fans to think.
A good one to vote for still is Gates. An over the hill injury prone tight end who is no longer even close to the best at his position. He may be even more awkward than Hillis, who had at least played the entire season before and put up good numbers.
But of all the players left, there is no one I would vote for over Rodgers. _________________

When has Aaron every said he wants to be on the cover? |
Last year. He said he grew up playing the games and would love to be on the cover.
And Scuba, here's a brief history of the madden curse (effected by curse in bold):
Garrison Hurst essentially ended his career with an injury when he was the first cover athlete
Sanders retired
Eddie George had a great season.
Culpepper was fine but played like Culpepper.-Had a career high in INTs with 23. His worst seaosn before his knee blew up
Faulk was fine, got older and slowly declined the rest of his career.-Had his worst year since 1996 and never regained form
Vick broke the leg.
Ray Lewis got hurt at the end of the season.
McNabb tore his ACL
Alexander was mostly fine but missed a couple of games.
Favre unretired.-Tore his Pec and had a terrbad season.
Fitzgerald had a career year. Polomalu missed most of the season with injury.
Drew Brees was fine.-threw for a career high INT and got beat out by the first losing team in the playoffs
Peyton Hillis was a wuss and a crybaby, refusing to play because of a contract squabble (and pretended to be ill or injured).
So a running back, two scrambling QBs, and an oft-injured safety are all you have to put your hat on for a curse. If you count Hillis, that's two running backs, the most commonly injured position on the field.

your additions are laughable.
Culpepper's interception percentage was in line with his career norms at that point. He just threw almost 100 times more than in any other season. Skewed the numbers. Also had a career high in rushing yards and TDs.
Faulk was 30. You know, the time that RBs decline. Still had 1400 yards and 10 tds that season.
Favre did not tear his pectoral. he would have missed time for that. Very late in the season he got a minor tear in his bicep. Favre had many poor seasons around that time, in fact it was still his third best season among the last 6 seasons of his career.
Brees' total turnover numbers were in line with his career norms. And how is any loss in the playoffs something to say was curse related? How many 11 win teams have lost to 7 win teams in the history of the NFL? It just happened in the playoffs is all.
your additions show more that you WANT there to be a curse than providing any actual evidence of one. _________________

I think one thing that gets overlooked in the 08 Favre cover is that the curse did not really apply to his injury. They released his Packers cover when he was still retired. After that he got "the itch," and you saw how it affected things after that. It certainly hurt the team of which his cover jersey represented.
I believe, and I voted Rice. _________________

2001 Eddie George loses the game for them in the playoffs, doesn't avg more then 3.4 yards the rest of his career - AFTER, cherry picking years
2002 Daunte culpepper 23 interceptions as the Vikings slumped to a 5–11 - (That's what Culpepper does.)record, also set nfl record for most fumbles in a season (he missed zero games)
2004 Mike Vick breaks his leg found out he fights dogs (dogfighting was way after)
2005 ray lewis breaks wrist (ray lewis had a career year, he sat week 16)
2006 shaun alexander falls off the map, also got a foot injury (2005 was the abberation, he had an amazing line that disintegrated)
2008 vince young id assume we all know what happend to him ( Young continued his NFL apprenticeship, increasing his yardage, completion rate and QB rating while leading the Titans to the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2003.)
2009 Favre breaks his shoulder (favre missed zero games)
2010 Troy polamalu strains mcl (LARRY FITZ HAD A CAREER YEAR)
2011 Brees throws twice as many interceptions as the year before (DREW BREES'S TURNOVERS STAYED THE SAME IF YOU FACTOR IN HIS FUMBLES)
2012 peyton hillis became a bum (WAS HE EVER GREAT?)
the odds of an nfl featureback starting 16 games is UNDER 50%.
troy P has been hurt more years than not.
The odds of an NFL star suffering any of the following:
-injury
-statistical decline
-a losing season
Is incredibly high.
Especially when you factor in the idea that it takes an outlier-year to make it on the cover.
Also you're totally cherry picking years. You can't pick and choose which year a player sucks. It's got to be the year they appear on the cover. And in 2000, George posted career highs in rushing yards (1509) and rushing TDs (14). As a result, he made the AFC Pro Bowl team and was also named an All-Pro.
You didn't mentoin Marshall Faulks 1490 combined yards and lack of injury.
And you totally forgot Dorsey Levens. Levens had a great year. 1999 was the second-best year of his eleven-year career, and he not only rushed for 1034 yards (second-best season), he caught 71 passes for 573 yards, both career highs. _________________

Seriously. "It made Brees lose a playoff game!" Really? because I thought Marshawn Lynch made him lose a playoff game. _________________

| The curse can lie latent for a few years if need be. It doesn't have to be the same season. This is a lifelong plague. Why would you even want to take the chance with Aaron? |
