The offenses look really bad. Penalties, dropped passes, offensive line getting pushed back, ugh. _________________

First half summary: Green 3 - Orange 0
This game has been all defense, helped by some inept offense. Thomas Finnie and Brandon McGee have INTs off of Ryan Williams and Gray Crow. Anthony Chickillo has owned Seantrel Henderson. Ryan Williams has been Captain Checkdown with one exception, he threw what would have been a 60+ yard TD off play action to Clive Walford that was dropped with no one near him. The first team Offense had first and goal off of the McGee INT and failed to score. The Offensive line has had at least 6 penalties. There has been no running game at all. Preston Dewey lead the only scoring drive and looked solid. The kickers are a combined 1 for 3 on FGs, including one missed from inside 30 yards. _________________

Scott beats his man, makes a big catch, then fumbles...
Offensive line has been very underwhelming. _________________

Gray Crow gives me the lump in my throat when he throws just like Jacory did. I'm glad he shouldn't be seeing the field this fall. _________________

Finally, a TD. Nice hard run by Mike James. The Defensive line looked worn down and the Offensive line took advantage and pushed them off the ball. _________________

Final: Orange 7 - Green 6
One thing that stands out and is really concerning is the lack of playmakers on Offense. Rashawn Scott made one long catch but was stripped from behind by Juco transfer Ladarius Gunter. Clive Walford was open for a 60+ yard TD but dropped the pass as it hit his hands. Phillip Dorsett made the lone big play on a short catch and run that led to the only TD. The RBs didn't do much and didn't look explosive. The team is going to need Duke Johnson to come in in the fall and be ready to add some electricity to the Offense as a true freshman.
Individual player notes:
Sophomore CB Thomas Finnie was very solid in coverage the entire game. He made one INT and was routinely in terrific position on his man.
Freshman CB Larry Hope looked pretty good with a couple of passes defended and making solid tackles after short receptions.
Junior LB Tyrone Cornileus was around the ball all game. He's undersized at LB but he used his speed to avoid blocks and get in on several tackles.
Freshman LB Raphael Kirby was able to run down the middle of the secondary on a few plays and provide good underneath coverage on the seam and post routes.
Sophomore LB Denzel Perryman laid the wood a few times and was constantly around the ball.
Junior OT Seantrel Henderson looked slimmer but not quick at all. He was overmatched against Anthony Chickillo but did an adequate job against other players.
Senior RB Mike James doesn't have burst at all. He's best relegated to part time duty and not the lead role in the running game.
Sophomore QB Ryan Williams had a few passes deflected and threw two INTs. He mostly checked down to short routes but wasn't helped by Scott fumbling after a long gain and Walford dropping a TD. When pass protection became a problem they started calling more roll outs and Williams showed that he does not throw the ball well when his feet are moving.
Freshman QB Gray Crow looked like Jacory Harris too many times, throwing into double coverage and completely airmailing receivers other times. He threw two INTs as well and had numerous passes deflected.
Going forward:
The Offense is going to need some speed and spark. Duke Johnson should get a chance immediately, but I don't know if he'll be enough. I was very underwhelmed by Miami's RBs today. The line didn't do the backs any favors but they still didn't look explosive or overly athletic. Williams looks like a game manager at QB, which will make the need for skill position playmakers even more important. Stephen Morris didn't play and hardly practiced this spring so we won't know if his decision making and accuracy have improved until the fall.
The Defense played well for the most part but they were certainly helped by the ineptness of the Offense, especially early. The coverage was pretty good and a nice surprise. The LBs are undersized and will need to rely on speed. That could be a problem against teams with big Offensive lines and teams that run misdirection to use the LBs speed and first step against them. Miami's Offense didn't run much misdirection today, I think they may have had more success running if they had. _________________

So our O sucks but our D's much improved? When does Duke, Tracy, and the others join up? In the summer? I think Duke will add alot to this offense. Mike James just isn't a starting RB type. He's more of just a 3rd down back. _________________

Hard to be certain with intrasquad practices, scrimmages, and Spring Game. It's possible the Defense looks good because the Offense is so bad. _________________
