Breaking: #Redskins signed former #Texans kicker Neil Rackers to a 1-year deal.

Rackers spent the past two seasons with the Texans and went 59 of 68 in field goal attempts including 32 of 38 last season.

This means the Texans have no kicker currently on the roster.

He is a good player and use to be a probowl kicker. Should give gabi a tough time in camp.

Well if they are going to bring in someone for competition, I don't know if there's anyone better. I want to see Gano improve and stick here a while, but we have to make sure the K position is solid. May the best man win...

I still think Gano beats him out but I like that Shanahan is continuing to preach competition and demonstrating it. If replacing Gano is the goal, Rackers would be high on my wish list. I mean we did give him $10 million per year when I was GM for FFMD...

Would you like to know more?

Rackers has one good kick left in him. Hopefully its used to kick Grossman in the sac.

This...

I'm glad they are bringing in serious competition for Gano. May the best man win. I still hope its Gano, but like you Footy, I cannot think of a better competitor than Rackers that is available right now.

Remember, as much as I like Gano and alot of other Redskins, we were 5-11 last year with the guys on our roster.

EVERYONE should have competition this offseason!!

Good signing! Very Happy

Great competition for Oh-No-Gano. Should be a great completion this preseason for the job.

“We’re going to see what happens, but it seems like the best opportunity for me and my family at this point,” Rackers told the TV station. “There’s more upside, more opportunity for advancement in Washington.”

I can't remember, Did we tender oh no Gano? I can't remember, he is a restricted free agency this year.

We did tender him. Wish we could improve our kick blocking this year though. No matter who the kicker is, they aren't going to be very successful getting 8 kicks blocked each year.

Yep definitely true.

Rackers is, and this is weird to say, probably my favorite kicker in recent memory. Somehow or another, I consistently ended up with him as the kicker on my fantasy teams when I was in college --- to the point where my team name for several years was "Don't F*** With Rackers."

That said, I'm not a huge fan of this. I think that's probably because I don't really see the point in competition for a K. I may simply not understand the position, but it's not one where I can envision "playing harder" because you're motivated by competition resulting in better kicks or better training. It seems to me that it's really more about confidence and having a clear, focused mind that won't interrupt you while you're going through the muscle-memory routine of making your kick.

But as I said, it's possible I just don't understand the position. What I do understand is that for a 35-year-old to unseat a 25-year-old at ANY position, he needs to be a lot better. And I don't see that happening.

As I recall--NO-no changed from a 3 step to a 2-step style last year .. So he has that years adjustment period under his belt--I'm hoping he'll be much more comfortable this year-- and be lights out !

And he was better last year than the previous one. The guy is a good kicker. I just wish we had some blocking on kicks.
