Peter King's mock has us taking Colby Fleener in the first. Although he says we should take Hill. Just throwing that in here. _________________

I think Hill has less chance of lasting to our pick than Fleener. _________________

How would the Jacobs signing be idiotic? Jacobs is a 1 year stop gap signing, and he was brought in to mainly be a power back. He may not even make the team this year. RB's don't have high shelf lives but he could contribute for 6-8 years (same timeframe as Gore, his 8th year coming up). |
Because signing him would've been completely pointless if we wanted to draft Martin. Do you think we'd go into the season with 4 quality running backs (Gore/Martin/Jacons/Hunter)? Yes we're a run first team, but we don't need 4 backs. IMO the signing of Jacobs would have been idiotic because it's essentially just throwing money away. Sure not all of his money is guaranteed, but he'll still receive some of it.
The reason I highly doubt we draft Martin is because we signed Jacobs. If we wanted Martin, we wouldn't have needed to sign a stop gap, because Martin could have just been fine as a back up. It worked well with Hunter last year, putting him in situations to succeed.
Doug Martin isn't someone who just jumped on the scene too, he's been well known and Baalke should've known if he had an interested during the Jacobs signing. | If we felt we needed another RB, it would make no sense to wait until the draft. They signed Jacobs because they want to be able to take whoever they believe will be the best player. If it isn't a RB we already addressed the position, but it would be stupid to pass on Martin if they feel he is the best player at our spot, just because we signed Jacobs... Any non-impact FA signing is really just insurance against not being in a position to address that spot in the draft.
I am also of the belief that if the team didn't have confidence our starting RG was on the roster they would have signed somebody. I am not saying they won't take a guard, but I think they have a bit more confidence in Kilgore and Boone to fill the spot than most on here do. IMO, all of our moves this FA period were to address holes in our lineup for the upcoming year with short term fixes, so that we can go BPA in the draft. |

I'm a big fan of Greg Cosell's and take his opinion much higher than guys like Todd McShay, so the fact that he agree's with me on Doug Martin here would make me feel even better about this pick as it's the exact same assessment I get with Martin, something about watching the guy play just speaks to you
| Quote: | | 32. Giants: Tom Coughlin still wants to run the ball. Never forget that. Boise State’s Doug Martin is the pick. Martin has a feature back mentality. He attacked downhill with decisiveness, determination, toughness and competitiveness. There was a blue collar, workingman element to his game that was more appealing and captivating with each tape I watched. He ran with velocity, and that translated into natural power. There were some elements of Ray Rice in Martin’s running style. Martin was one of the last players I re-watched late in the process, and I liked him more each time I saw him. |

You bring up valid points. But I can't really see how Baalke is interested in Martin now. Like I said, he's not a guy who's stock has been moving up or down. Pair that with Baalke saying that he knows his guy will be there when we pick, and it just doesn't add up. Would you sign Jacobs, if you knew Martin would be there with your pick and wanted him? |
