I'm sorry, but when you consider Eric Wright has a contract for 7.5 million per year from the Bucs and the boatload that Dallas paid for Brandon Carr, Champ has a better value contract at eight-nine per year. |
Not being an aficionado of all things Brandon Carr I don't want to get into an argument about how his game compares to Champ's or whatever. Suffice to say, both players you named are younger than Champ Bailey and that is a big(and justified in my opinion) part of the reason their contracts are seemingly large.
Also, two wrongs don't make a right etc. Do you really want examples of quality corners who are better values? I could use the formulaic Ike Taylor example as a solid corner(who is great in run support by the way, Pittsburgh knows what they're doing) or I could name Jonathan Joseph as a guy who is 5 years younger than Champ and far better. I don't see the point though. Simply put, not every cornerback makes astronomical numbers(not yet at least) for their relative impact and yes I do think Champ Bailey is overpaid. He's still good thankfully, and if he ages better than expected the contract will be less bad, but yes he is still an overpaid player in my eyes.
But since you took this particular track by focusing on other highly paid corners, I should state what I implied earlier that I believe the value of corners is wildly overvalued by people. |
Sure, its overvalued just as much as an quarterback, offensive tackle, and pass rusher, but the reason for this is because those four positions are the four most important positions on the team. While you say that corners are wildy overvalued, it wouldn't be hard to argue that the reason the Pats lost the SuperBowl was due to their corners: Devin McCourty, Sterling Moore, Antwaun Molden, and Julian Edelman. |
Edelman didnt even play a snap. Molden was meh. But you could easily argue the Pats lost because they suck throughout the defense. Only spots you cant make an argument for is NT and ILB.... _________________

According to Schefter (who bases his report on Denver sources), we're not after Asante anymore. _________________

Not surprised. Asante Samuel has been serious about not taking a paycut. If the Eagles cannot force him to take a paycut or restructure than no team will trade for him. Especially our team with about no salary cap flexibility left.
However, dont think this is over people. The Eagles HAVE to get rid of him somehow, due to cap and player issues. They very well may be releasing him in August if no team is willing to take the contract. We may have to visit this conversation again if the Eagles cannot find a trading partner. _________________

I thought it might be do to cap issues also, but found out that as of March 30, the Eagles were still $16 million under. It surprised me. Could be they just realized that they shouldn't spend that much on one position.
I do think they'll eventually release him though and let him seek his own deal.
Is their a date they have to release him by so he doesn't count against the cap? |

I believe I was reading reports that said his contract was either not fully guaranteed or there was no signing bonus, so the Eagles can essentially cut him before the season without a cap hit. Thats the main reason why they wont get much for him. His cap hit is around $9M right now I believe... _________________

| According to schefter falcons on verge of getting Asante for a late round pick either 5th or 6th im sorry but if he could be had for a a 5th or a 6th and I'm sure restructuring his deal we dropped the ball big IMO would have way more or an impact than porter plus low risk when it's a 5th or 6th. Im in agreement with this. Ill wait to hear what hes restructuring at but all reports say its a low pick and a restructure.
One thing that should be noted, the Falcons are already over the cap. So this is going to get interesting. Theyll have to make a move somehow. _________________

This is the thing, he got traded for a low 5th, but he's still making about 6 mil a year. The pick isn't the only thing you need to look at in this equation. Is it worth paying Samuel 6 million a year when he'll be 32 when the season starts. I would say no. I would much rather draft and groom young talent that's cheaper than throw all my money at Asante Samuel. _________________

Exactly... Especially since we now have Tracy Porter and also have Chris Harris. Who was ranked as one of the best nickel CB's in the entire NFL last season. CB's aren't exactly our weak point. I have no problem whatsoever with EFX passing on this trade. _________________

Just came over here to post this.
| Quote: | According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the Broncos thought they had a deal done for CB Asante Samuel, but he changed his mind.
The Broncos were heavily tied to Samuel throughout the process, but the Falcons swooped in over the last few days. Denver's offer was less than the three-year, $18.5 million contract Samuel agreed to with Atlanta. Obviously, it wasn't quite enough to get him to bite. Recently-signed Tracy Porter remains the favorite to start opposite of Champ Bailey in Denver. |
(Same link as above)
And it was for a 7th too, just for the record. _________________ "John Wayne and Rio Lobo are coming up next, just as soon as Jeffrey Leonard hits into a 6-4-3." (CRACK!) "Six...four...three!" -- Skip Caray |
