ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the NFL is moving toward suspending the Pro Bowl game, as soon as this year.
Per Mort's report, teams would still honor Pro Bowl incentives to avoid a conflict with the NFL Players Association. "There may be no Pro Bowl this year," ESPN's John Clayton said on SportsCenter Thursday. Commissioner Roger Goodell has spoken of eliminating the Pro Bowl game since February. Last year's 59-41 AFC win over the NFC was booed for its lack of intensity.

Whether it's intense or not, I still really like watching the game. I think it would be weird for a sport to not have an all-star game.[/b]

Posturing by Goodell.

What he doesn't want are the ratings for the Pro Bowl to continually decline and have the network preempt it with some other sports broadcast.

Surrendering the Pro Bowl will force the league to do a giveback on shared revenue from the massive TV contract and also to advertisers. A giveback shrinks the money pool and thus shrinks the percentage of the pool going to players.

What he's really trying to do is leverage the union to pressure the players to play harder. But this is something he can't really control. Players don't want to get hurt.

What he should do is find a positive incentive instead of a negative one to get better play. On the winning team, have a per unit bonus.

Defense

Defensive Line
Linebackers
Corners and Safeties

Offense

Offensive Line
Skill 1 - QB and RB
Skill 2 - WR and TE

Give a million dollar TAX FREE bonus ( meaning the league pays the tax) to one player in each category on the WINNING TEAM. Voted on by a veteran coaching committee who observe the game.

The league can easily make that up with increased ratings and interest in the event.

This is just an area where Goodell doesn't have to carry a big stick and try to keep hitting people like he does on other issues. This is just bad PR for Goodell and his commissioners office. You carry the big stick because you have to, when the perception changes that you do it because you just want to, then you lose any kind of cooperation from the players union.

While I agree they should suspend the Pro Bowl, I think they should supplement it with a skills challenge.

The union would s*it a brick over players not getting labeled a "Pro-Bowler."

Exactly. The skills challenges from the early 2000's were awesome. They need more of that.

You can still have Pro Bowl title, but just not the game.

Why is the title necessary? Under the current CBA teams can't spend less then a certain amount of cap. The same pool of money being paid out to players is still going to exist, its not like players on a whole will be paid less without "pro-bowlers". I don't see the union being able to have a problem with that.

Many current players have pro-bowl bonuses written into their current contracts. The union would not allow those to just disappear. Just vote the teams like it is now, honor those clauses, and forget the "sham" of a 7-on-7 flag football game.

The NFL is a cash machine right now. There isn't any logical reason to continue to play this game. Just let one player get seriously injured and the fact that it was still being played would be the real "nightmare". Stopping it now is the best option.

Well players have egos, and they'd like to be recognized for a good season. College players get to be called all-americans, so nfl players want a title.
