The way I see the OL, we've got Trent who again got better and better as the season went on. With another offseason and season to improve, I really think he's on his way to being nearly a top 5 LT in the league. Now if he can just stay out of trouble. On the right side, we've got something of a question. But if we can take Shanny at his word (and I don't know if we can), Jammal may be full speed this season. If he can really go, he's going to be solid at RT. And Wee Willie showed a fair amount as a reserve last season, despite being a UDFA who got no offseason work with our coaches. Would like to see another young OT they like added for depth, but I'm not sure it's an overriding concern that has to be an immediate pick.
As for the interior, we've got Steiger who was very good when he was on the field at the beginning of the season. Hopefully he's back at full speed too. Monty is solid in the middle, nothing spectacular, but a solid starter. And Chester really came on last season, turning his obvious athletic ability into good production on the field. And Maurice Hurt showed he has some talent as well, though he has a ways to go. Clearly they aren't done with this position, given that they took looks at Grubbs and Mathis, but again I think I'd like to see them grab a youngster to groom for the future.
For me, I'd like to see them grab two OL in the draft. A player with the ability to play C would be a nice bonus, as I'm not real comfortable with the "depth" we have behind Monty. A depth group of Mo Hurt, Wee Willie, and two rookies would make me feel pretty good about the future. Perhaps even Polumbus could hang around for his versatility if they think one of the rookies is a better fit for the PS. _________________

I certainly understand what you are saying. I'm thankful that our organization is building a strong team. They worked on the defense last year and look to be working on the offense this year. I keep seeing a bunch of misguided attacks on our OLine in this forum. They were hurt last year and that disrupted every position except for RG, who took several games to learn the system. The OLine was a mess, and I'm proud of our team for hanging in there as well as they did considering the circumstances. Some think that impatience and constant turnover is the way to build a team. Some of us believe that if we can keep the same OLine that we had in the first game last year, they will continue to build and get better. |

Sir, you do this by building depth and especially young depth to build for our future.
How can people possibly be upset with that position? Do you not want young OL who have mid round talent to develop to open up Lanes for our young wrs and most importantly protect our #2 overall draft pick who will be a qb?
No one on this site is talking about a massive overhaul in the OL. We are talking about depth and possibly an upgrade to one position on the OL which has been a revolving door and a constant injury problem for us for the past 7 years and you guessed it, that's RT!
Drafting a Tackle prospect and an C/G prospect with two of those four picks gives us young depth, and a fall back in case we run into major injury again like we did with Kory and Jamaal last year. We need to do this for present depth and for the future of our Offense as a whole. _________________

I would never discount a depth signing turtle because Shanahan has had success with castoffs throughout his coaching career. It is clearly the system, and understanding it, that matters more than raw talent. Moreover, we both know that Morocco Brown is a stud and is highly influential in these moves. James Lee is good competition and he might do quite well in this system. Look at Montgomery as an example of the potential upside in this type of signing.
Point: you do not need to build your OL with Day 1 and Day 2 picks. _________________

Point: you do not need to build your OL with Day 1 and Day 2 picks. | The 3rd round is day 2 now and the 4-7 is day 3 picks. That is where I've advocated us selecting OL in this draft and in past drafts, it will be that way in the future as well.
I've NEVER advocated us spending all 1st and 2nd round picks on the OL, but I would like to see a mid round (preferably two) spent on the OL in every draft. That's how you develop and build a solid OL that will constantly be one of the best in the nfl. _________________
