Robert Blanton [DB] Notre Dame
6'1
208 lbs
SR

Quote:
Strengths: Tall and athletic with plus length for the position (31" arms). He plays with the physical nature to shed defenders and work off blocks. Good toughness and recognition skills to fight through traffic and blow up screens. Plays with good fundamentals and takes accurate angles to the ballcarrier. A strong, aggressive tackler and doesn't back down against the run. Physical downfield and matches up well with bigger receivers. Tough and fiery with very good competitiveness ... high effort player. Has very good focus on interceptions to make the pick and return it for positive yardage. Has good starting experience with at least one start in each of his four seasons and 26 career starts. Productive and finished third on the team in tackles in 2011.

Weaknesses: Has only average long-speed and body flexibility. Opens his hips too early and allows himself to get turned around in coverage. Needs to improve his footwork and balance in coverage. Transitions out of his backpedal too early and doesn't look natural moving in reverse. Too hands-on downfield and is an easy target for defensive holding and pass interference penalties ' really struggles in this area. Has suspect anticipation and instincts, doing a lot of guessing. Misses too many assignments and makes poor reads, struggling to quickly decipher what the offense is doing. An inconsistent wrap tackler and tends to hit too high and doesn't always finish. Plays too far off the line of scrimmage and doesn't have a lot of experience in press coverage.

NFL Comparison: Keenan Lewis, Pittsburgh Steeler

Played CB at Notre Dame. Looks like a perfect FS to me.

He's an NFL safety. Not a horrible pick.

Your other starting safety was just picked. If he can play safety, or cover TEs on 3rd down, I'm all in on this pick.

i will say vikingsrule did very well in pre-season mocks in identifying guys who could help us, and then they get picked.

Blanton was on his list in the 5th.

Applause

Blanton was a reliable, if not flashy, cornerback at Notre Dame. At this point, he could step in as a stopgap but has work to do before he can be a starter in the NFL. Blanton is a heady prospect who plays to his strengths. He understands footwork and technique in man-to-man coverage, but is not athletic enough to run freely with any receiver. He could be a backup as an outside corner or even in the nickel spot, and is worth a third-round pick.

VD and myself both mocked Blanton to MN often. We usually had him as a 7th round pick, but nevertheless, he has the size to play CB or S. He is as big as Brandon Carr, not sure if he has the speed to play CB though. I see him as a likely Safety, which was a need. Though Blanton has good agility and short area skils, which leads me to believe he could be a safety.

He's a safety for us, not a corner.

Don't know the kid, but it appears that chemistry wont a problem in the safety corps with Harrison and Blanton there.

Very good pick. Took over games on defense for Notre Dame. Always seemed to be around the ball. Tough, and had pretty sticky hands.

Polian says Blanton is a perfect fit for our defense.

I'm OK with the pick but I will say we reached for him by a lot.
