What did your team's draft tell you about your team

What did you take away from it? What positions are your team confident in, did the players they draft tell you what kind of players they like, did they take players that visited the facility, any trends you can pick up on? etc. For the 49ers

-They want to try and manipulate the draft. They turned pick 92 into a future 3, 5, and 6, alongside two 2012 6's. Time will tell if it turns out to be the right move.

-They identified and attacked a pathetic lack of speed and explosiveness. People thought Harbaugh was a power run, 2 TE set kind of offensive coach, and he likes that...but above all else he wants versatility. So we still have that with Gore and Davis/Walker, but now we get an instant boost of offense with Jenkins and James.

-They like physical upside, but they also value game tape. They like Height-Weight-Speed and i figured they wouldn't pass on a specimen like Stephen Hill. But they also value game tape and production in college, as evidenced by Aldon Smith's monster junior season, and AJ Jenkins production in Illinois. In Harbaugh's presser he even defied anyone to find something wrong with Jenkins film, so that factors in highly. So I personally thought guys like Hill and even Poe were options for us at 30 if available, but likely not (note- i'm not saying they're bad picks. I like both, especially Hill. Just writing on the basis of what i've gleaned from their drafting strategy).

We have a lot of offense. We need a lot of defense. That's what the Packers' draft told me.

The Raiders are finally taking the draft seriously.

The Falcons were protecting their investment in Matt Ryan, and we definitely needed some depth at certain positions on defense.

Our first 3 picks we used on guys that will help protect Matt Ryan as last year he got hit almost every other down it seemed like.

Peter Konz- Will fill our hole at RG which 3 or so people filled in last year, none playing good in any sort of way. Next year after McClure retires he should slide over to C.

Lamar Hughes- 5-6 round prospect, we took him in the third and he is supposed to come in and compete right away. He is a pass protector so that's good for Matt Ryan. Will have to work on run blocking if he wants playing time.

Bradie Ewing- Good sized FB, will replace Ovie Mughelli who should be getting cut any day. We wanted a FB who is versatile much like a Marcel Reece or a John Kuhn, and Ewing should bring that in (he has good hands and used to be a RB so he knows how to run). He is also great on ST.


Then we just picked up a pass rushing specialist in Johnathan Massaquoi who hopefully turn out like his predecessor pass rushers from Troy, Charles Mitchell who will give us S depth as Sanders didn't get re-signed (also great on ST), and finally Travian Robertson who will give us DT depth.

That they saw the same things wrong with my team as I did, which is a good thing. We needed a better running offense to help Freeman and a better rush defense since it's been awful.

Oh, that they know Sean Jones sucks, too.

I would say that we value potential and upside over anything else. To me the Russell Wilson and Bruce Irvin picks were based entirely on potential 3 years from now. Irvin will probably contribute to 30% of the snaps next year or maybe more but he's not going to be an every down starter imo.

The Texans draft tells me they are continuing to make this a tougher team. Especially with their later picks. Mercilus is a tough player, don't get me wrong, but Ben Jones from Georgia and Jared Crick from Nebraska are probably two of the toughest players in the whole draft.

It also told me we thought the loss of Winston and Brisiel was as big of a deal as the media said it was because we drafted 3 offensive linemen total.

That the Titans are moving away from a power running team. With the Kendall Wright pick which suprised the hell out of me and then taking a TE/DE in the 5th Taylor Thompson. I thought we were set at both positions assuming Britt was on track which he is. Munchak is setting Locker up with some very explosive weapons. Just the thought of Britt, Wright, Washington, Williams, Hawkins, with Cook, Stephens(4.59 speed at 6'6 260LBS), and Stevens at TE, and then CJ in the backfield. Could eventually become the most explosive offense in the NFL.

Spielman LOVES to trade picks.

We moved down one spot in round 1. We moved several times throughout the draft as well, like to get Harrison Smith in round 1, getting future pick from the Lions and getting a future pick from the Titans.

Basically, we had an excess of draft picks and Spielman thought it was more ideal to trade those excess picks for draft picks in the future. Excellent strategy.

Furthermore, MN drafted 2 players from Arkansas, 2 players from Notre Dame and 2 players from USC. It seems that Spielman has a preference for big time football programs, rather than trying to get small school guys. Though he took Fusco from Slippery Rock last year.

Spielman also likes tweener players, players who fill multiple positions. Guyton can play DE/DT. Ellison can play FB/TE. Blanton will play Safety, but can play CB.

For the Panthers:

1. Improving Special Teams was of the biggest priority.

2. We are fine with the progression of a lot of players that were drafted last year, thus not bringing in players to compete with them.

3. We are serious about LB play.
