NFL draft: Vikings GM says, 'We did have offers on table ... Cleveland did right thing'

I guess we can put this to bed now.

I read something recently (on my phone so I didn't save the link) that said it wasn't Tampa Bay, but St. Louis that was trying to move up for Richardson. Apparently, the thing that got the deal done for us was Holmgren's relationship with Rick Speilman - proving yet again that payback is indeed a mofo.

Hogwash.

H&H got played. This is nothing more than Lamonte leaking this to try and save face for his clients.

You're on to something.

    Mike Holmgren (Cleveland Browns President)
Tom Heckert (Cleveland Browns General Manager)
Rick Spielman (Minnesota Vikings General Manager)

Everyone remember to pay homage to the Bobfather every time Richardson scores a TD.

Dear lord. I was just being sarcastic, now that some will see this, this will actually become part of their argument. SMFH

I believe Heckert was not duped. But Speilman saying the same thing does nothing to change or solidify that position. He has a lot to lose in future negotiations if he is found to be a 'snake oil' salesman.

I believe Heckert was not duped for a few reasons:

1) Trent Richardson was a hot commodity
2) Tampa traded down immediately

And, Tampa later traded up into the 1st for a RB (Martin).

We'll never know if the Vikes would've pulled the trigger with someone else, but there is pretty sufficient evidence to show that there was serious interest by other teams in #3.

Browns did the right thing trading up. We had a lot of picks. Richardson on paper improves our off. line, our q.b. and our passing game. Same can be said about Schwartz if he becomes a good right tackle and Weeden at q.b.
Look at the Rams they had extra picks and wanted Blackmon but let the Jags move up and steal him. Why didn't they give Tampa a 4th rounder and move up for Blackmon. I'd be upset if I was a Rams fan. The Jags like us did the right thing.

It's a delicate balance. The Browns are perceived to have panicked because they traded up for Richardson, but the Rams and Bucs got a little too cute and end up missing out on elite talents (Claiborne and Blackmon).

I hear you Reggie. I just think the Browns and Rams needed to help their q.b's. You do that by getting quality. I think the Pats did the right thing in trading up for Chandler Jones and Donta Hightower. Their defense on paper got two good defenders. Might just help them win a super bowl. You know that went against what Belichek usually does trading down.

I think the Browns did the right thing with Richardson. The rest of the draft may be a different story. They need those receivers to hit to make it nice. I don't think that brownie defense is bad at all, just need to score points.

I can't believe how much airtime us trading a freaking 4th round, 5th and 7th round pick has gotten. We didn't give up a major pick to move up the one spot, but it's being talked about as though we did. This is being talked about as much as Washington giving up 3 firsts, a second for Griffin and still drafting a QB in round 4 is.

I'm somewhat surprised that the stupid Cleveland media believed we rushed the trade up. Obviously, teams were trading like crazy in the first round because teams knew the players they wanted and knew which other teams also wanted that same player.

It was very obvious that other teams wanted the pick, and the RGIII trade over a month ago set the stage for the draft in terms of trading. Ever since the new salary cap on rookies, teams appear much more likely to trade up because they don't pay in both picks and insane salary.

At the end of the day, early trades in the first round will become the norm and not the exception.

I can't believe there's some people who think the Vikings fleeced the Browns in that trade. I thought it was a trade that people would think it was good for both teams. It's not like the Browns gave up a high pick to move up one spot. They gave up a mid-round pick and a couple of late-round picks to ensure that they get a player with MVP-caliber talent. It's possible that no other team would have traded up, but I'm glad the Browns traded a few late-round picks to ensure they got the guy they wanted, especially considering they had plenty of late-round picks. Before, I thought Tampa would have been fine with settling for Claiborne if Richardson was gone but they actually passed on Claiborne. That tells me that they likely really wanted Richardson and when they missed out on him, they decided to trade down.

It was a good trade for both teams. The Vikings got the player they wanted while adding a few picks later in the draft. The Browns only had to give up a few late-round picks to ensure they got the player they wanted most. Sounds like a good deal for both sides.
