Spence will play a Rover position in our scheme. He has the size to match up against TEs and the quickness to match the Ray Rices. He will be a situational player and the Steelers will use his skillsets to neutralize opposing teams. I somehow believe the Steelers had Kendricks rated higher than Spence but Eagles stole our guy. _________________

Ilb... NEXT!
He reminds me of London Fletcher, yes, he needs to gain 10-15 lbs but that can be done while he's backing up Foote and playing special teams the next few years. _________________

MightyJoe, he's 5'11, 230 lbs. why does he need to grow to cover tight ends?
Most safeties and Wlbs in the nfl are around that size or smaller, they cover tight ends. _________________

I hope they took him because they are gonna take a 2 down thumper next year and want Spence to pay passing downs. I think he would be sick in that role. Also if he splits time with another player it would decrease the amount of money they make. We already have 3 of the highest paid linebackers. We cant afford a 4th. _________________

I have know idea why Steelers fans always want to transition a player from one position to the next. His size has very little to do with how he plays. He's not stacking and shedding OL as K. Butler mentioned. The game is now about misdirection and players like Spence with his instincts and play diagnosis are key. |
The main reason people were talking about POSSIBLY switching him to safety was due his skillset, size and strength. His size absolutely does affect how he plays and what he is capable of. More than that, his strength...or lack thereof. The game may have alot of misdirection but LBs still have to be able to get off their blocks...thats not even up for debate. Spence has a small frame and is pretty weak, yet he has good instincts and excels in coverage.
He wont be switched to safety, but the thought process behind doing it is more than legit. |
Weak because he bench 225 12 times on a bad shoulder? I'm not gonna sit here and act like I've followed this kid from day one. All I have are 3-6 minute clips of a small body of work. But even with that little bit of information you can see what he is capable of. Do I expect him to stack and shed NFL caliber OL tomorrow, no. I expect him to get a chance to play and we'll get a chance to see him in TC. There we can get a gauge of how much his size has to do with his ability to makes plays. _________________

The bench reps "issue" is really getting out of hand.
I remember Jay Cutler benching it like, 24 times when he was drafted. Do you guys really think a quarterback is literally twice as strong as this LB?
Also, anyone else think he's backing up Timmons, because he'll start in Timmons spot in the near future?
Put Spence at Timmons spot, then move Timmons to the Buck spot? _________________ Come Follow My Oakland Multi-Sport Franchise! |

I dont know about Timmons moving to the Buck. In the presser for Spence Butler didn't seem too excited to have Timmons or Spence play the Buck. _________________

I had this convo last year with I THINK armsteeld and another person.
Bench press only displays a small part of a persons strength. Its definitely not an all telling sign of a players overall strength...
But please dont act like this is not an "issue". Watch him play. He is very instinctive. He reacts very well. But he also struggled to tackle bigger backs and receivers in college and if a blocker latched on to him him got taken out of the play. And thats college. In the NFL, his lack of strength and small frame is just going to be compounded.
I like Spence...I hope he succeeds and proves that its not a major issue....I personally have trouble seeing him being more than a nickle linebacker and used in some other creative packages. I dont see him ever being a full time ILB in our base defense. _________________

A bench press has absolutely nothing to do with playing football. Does he have to get stronger and put on more muscle to be able to stand up to the pounding of an nfl 16 game season, plus the playoffs??
The answer is certainly YES.
Do most nfl rookies come into the nfl and need to get stronger, add weight and get better at their positions while learning from veterans infront of them?
The answer is certainly YES.
Does Spence have incredible instincts, work eithic and the ability to improve and learn the defense?
I believe YES.
Quit worrying that on draft day he was 230 lbs. he won't be starting this year, Foote will be. He will work on getting stronger and other parts of his game. I fully trust the Pittsburgh Steelers front office and scouting department as they are one of the best in the nfl.
Be patient with him, and let's see what happens. _________________

Exactly...and he doent have much room to add much mass/bulk anyway. _________________

His draft day weight isnt whats concerning....its the fact that his playing weight through college was about 15 pounds lighter than that. And he looked slower at the combine even with that extra weight on him. And as I said, despite alot of his good qualities, he is lacking in others, and they are areas which held great college players back from being quality NFL players many times.
If you dont have concerns about the pick...thats your choice. Some people do...and there are legit reasons for it. Getting tired of hearing people say "give it time" when the fact is no one is writing him off. Just concerned about his fit in this defense, and for good reason.
And I trust the Steelers front office too...it doesnt mean they are always right or beyond question though. _________________

I think he would definitely go past his individual point where increased strength didn't mean increased speed/power output if he went any heavier than 235ish.
I don't even really want him to add any weight. He just needs more strength and that is something that will happen with the pro strength coaching regardless of if he increases weight. He probably had poor programming and nutrition in College. _________________
