The reason I'm not bummed about not taking a safety or tackle higher is because this draft was not conducive to finding starting safeties or tackles in the mid rounds. Plus I love the Compton pick. However the CB position really does scare me. Hall/Wilson is solid but after that we don't have very much. I think Cedric Griffin is terrible, but I'm sure he's a lock to make the team and be the number 3 corner.
I see our secondary like this.
CB: Hall/Wilson/Griffin/Thompson/Minnifield
FS: Jackson/Bernstine
SS: Merriweather/Gomes/Doughty
With Crawford on the Practice squad. Or I could also see Crawford on the 53 man roster if we IR Minnifield. I think Minnifield is a real keeper though, so happy we landed him. |
I'm not so sure that any of the CBs available in the third round or beyond is a lock to be any better than Hall and Wilson. Some of the problems in the secondary could have been coaching.
I notice that you have 10 DBs making the team. Normally it's nine. Out of those nine, they will have to have a special teams gunner or two. That can certainly throw a wrench into things. |

Crawford is raw. Shan and Hass reviewed all the DBs at the SR Bowl. Liked a few they said themselves. But in the end sat on Crawford for some reason.
I believe they trust in his rawness. He spent awhile at Community College. So he hasnt had very much quality coaching at all for the position.
They must feel like the upside is there for some reason. And he did work some the offseason with Robinson.
And Morris with Hass working them out every day. Cant really ask for a much better time to bring in someone said to be so raw. What he learns will be their way, less bad habits from other coaches or anything else.
So some coaching up this offseason. ANd a year on the PS sounds pretty good for getting this guy ready to hopefully hit the field. I do have better hope in him than I did for guys like Barnes, Gomes, and a few others back at DB. _________________

No way was I saying they would be better than hall or wilson. I do however think that they could have been upgrades over griffin westbrook barnes and some others. I'm just concerned with the lack of quality depth at corner. It's really the only position on the team I don't feel comfortable with.
As far as 10 DB's your right thats probably not accurate. But i would like it if there was a way for Minnifield, Bernstine, Thompson, and Crawford make the squad. We badly need a couple of these guys to step up because I think Barnes, Griffin, and Doughty are huge liabilities. _________________

Ahh, depth. Okay, now that's understandable. I think with DBs they have a lot of bodies and they will go with whoever wins the job through competition. I also agree that Doughty is a liability as a FS, and should only be used as a a SS. |

Oh, well that's great that coach that was coaching our secondary is now coaching our Linebackers....

Lol, Fletcher will keep them in line. I have a feeling Minifield works his way into the nickel role by mid-season. Believe in Dr. Andrews and trust the talent. _________________

| Quote: | Rookie Redskins’ cornerback Richard Crawford was 5-foot-7 when he graduated from El Camino High School in Oceanside, Calif.
The major college football programs, in turn, passed on offering Crawford — a short-but-speedy defensive back and kick returner — a spot on their teams.
Two years later, Crawford — now four inches taller — had transferred from Saddleback Community College in California to Southern Methodist University, where he would continue to move up the lists of professional football scouts nationwide. | interesting that he grew four inches from sr year in HS till now. _________________

I had hope for Gomes, but not the other DB's we've stuck on the depth chart... Good point about getting a raw guy who hasn't picked up bad habits. He really made some Great plays in college.
And like Big44dog talks about Minnifield-- I have VERY high hopes for him. I hope he is starting in a couple of years. He will be one of my favorites to watch and root for _________________
