Black Tusk has this Sick of it All meets girl voice feel to it. As a one time Sick of it All fan, I don't hate it.
One thing I do have to say about the new school bands is that they can play their instruments a lot better lol. English Dogs song was pretty good IMO though. it definitely has the english feel- the sing songy anthem like quality that the NYHC and Boston bands stole, but that drum-roll in the beginning that lets you know you're listening to a band from across the pond. Imo its kinda like if you took The Business and made them play music with Minor Threat

This is the kind of music thread I've been waiting for.
As an old guy (35) who used to spend quite a bit of time going to punk / hardcore shows in the LA / Hollywood area, I definitely appreciate the mix of old and new. A lot of the older bands will probably be my favorites, or guys that I used to listen to, and the newer ones will probably be fairly new to me as well.
I'll definitely be following this.

Absolutely. Dont get me wrong, I am not knocking it. Not at all. It was a DIY scene. If you could get your hands on an instrument, learn a chord or hold a beat, and make something with some energy and aggression, it was all good.
I know musicianship is important to a lot of people. But because of the old scene I am still more interested in the energy of the band or song.

Sweet. I am a couple years older than you and grew up in Long Beach. So I will naturally be playing a lot of old SoCal stuff. And Bay area stuff too.
You ever go to Fenders Ballroom in LB?

Absolutely. Dont get me wrong, I am not knocking it. Not at all. It was a DIY scene. If you could get your hands on an instrument, learn a chord or hold a beat, and make something with some energy and aggression, it was all good.
I know musicianship is important to a lot of people. But because of the old scene I am still more interested in the energy of the band or song. |
Yeah I hear ya there. I know a lot of people who will talk about how tight, or technical a band is, but like you I've always been more into the energy they have/exude/create than how clean they sound. Actually, sometimes it's even better if it's "sloppy" to some people's standards.
And sadly, I never made it to Fender's Ballroom. I've heard a lot of good stories about the place though. My boss was (for a short time) in a band called Ill Repute from Oxnard. He went there a number of times before it burned down, and has told me many stories about it, and the guys he used to hang out with. Sounds like it was a cool place to see a show.
This may very well become my favorite thread.

Ill Repute was always one of my favorite OC bands. Are they OC? Maybe not. I have been learning that even though I grew up in Long Beach, the layout of foreign to me.
Either way, I might have to break some out some IR for the thread. Heh.

Oxnard is actually Ventura County, but I know what you mean. For the longest time I thought Stockton was near Ventura, not Fresno lol.
I grew up in West Torrance / Redondo Beach, for a while at least, and live about an hour N/E of there now, but I've never really mastered where everything is in Cali. It took me a long time to learn a lot about where things are, but oh well haha.
I'd love to see some IR on here. Another buddy of mine played drums for Naked Agression for some time also.
