Goalies are badasses, that's all there is to it. Maybe a little to much, I would never play goal back then though. 
I wonder how many of the hits in that video would be suspendable in today's NHL?

Jacques Plante was the first Goaltender to use a mask in an actual game in 1959 for Montreal after breaking his nose. After he refused to go back in unless he wore the mask his coach was livid but had no backup Goalie. Other goalies at the time criticized Plante for wearing a mask, imagine that. It wasn't until 1972 that all goalies wore masks, now days play is stopped if a Goaltender's gear falls off.

Didn't Sawchuck have depression too? I'm guessing he was a guy with CTE thus causing the depression. Scary what these guys went through and how crazy they were.

I'll still argue, hockey and football players are equal in terms of physicality. Tremendous athletes.

It was actually Jacques Plante's team-mate, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, who deserves most of the credit, because he was the one who invented the slap shot. At least he was the first NHL player to make extensive use of it. People thought Geoffrion was crazy when he first came into the league in 1952. However, within a few years you went from a game of low, accurate 70mph wrist shots to one of 100mph slap shots that routinely came in at face level.
