I've found a vid showing some actual highlights of McMillian. Short but sweet.

In that video McShay says he saw this guy as an UFA because he saw THREE tapes on the guy and didn't see anything special about him. Is three tapes(film from 3 games I assume?) really enough to come to that sort of conclusion on the guy?

No lol. That cracked me up too.

Kiper said he loved him and it was a good pick, so it just shows you how much people's opinions can vary in the draft process.

Hope you guys understand that's how it works. Area scouts have a hell of a lot of kids their looking at. Odds are very high if a kid from that school is a player he will stand out. Should also be said that that staff did not pound the table for the kid. Some times good players get missed for one reason or another. It happens!

Most well run teams have cross checks post area that weeds out a miss here or there, but still.

Just saying. I looked at the kid and gave him a PFA grade. After the pick I have looked a little deeper and feel he has a chance. Only so many hours in the day though guys.

Jerron McMillian really jumped off (the film). I thought he had one of the more impressive three days of practices. (rookie camp)
Could McMillian suprise all of us and end up starting sometime during the season ? sleeper?

I didn't realize that would surprise anybody. I just assumed almost from the beginning that he'd be given every opportunity to start at safety this year. Nick Collins was a second rounder out of a small school and he started. Burnett started as a rookie. When full team minicamps start up, who do you think is going to going to line up with Burnett? What about nickel and dime packages?

After the season ended, there was an article talking about how after the coaching staff had gone over the film from 2011 he said that tackling was one of the things that really jumped out. I don't think it's a coincidence that McMillan, Hayward, and Manning all have 'lay-the-wood' reputations.

IMO, we're going to see a lot more dime coverage on 3rd and 7 or more and it could well include some guys like McMillan, maybe even in the nickel, too.

I was with that one until the "lay the wood rep" line. That's very much so how I see Manning. That kid can saw ya in half! That's not how I see the DB's though. McMillian is very tech sound in that area and gets ya in the dirt damn near every time. No issue there, but not a killer by any means. Hayward is willing but that's clearly not a "plus" in his game. Cut the legs out type at best.

That's how I saw the highlight vids on the two D-backs. Frpm the little I saw both of them seemed willing to find and engage the ballcarrier, but there were no big hits. Wrap and roll works for me.

If they get em to the ground consistently it's all good with me, as long as they cover well.. rather see that then a guy who can lay wood but ain't worth a Richard in coverage.

Depends how you define "anyone".

Also worth noting that "lay-the-wood" guys aren't necessarily always great, sound tacklers. Think the fundamentals are far more important than smacking the living daylights out of a guy, especially with the direction of the rule changes.

Manning has woodlayer cred. McMillian has a few bios which describe him as a 'big hitter' or 'hard tackler' . Hayward is just a solid tackler. Joe Whitt has described both McMillian and Hayward as good tacklers.

So we can argue semanatics, but IMO their tackling abilities set them apart from the others on Ted Thompson's draft board.

I did not think it was arguing semantics. Did not mean for it to come off as an argument at all to tell the truth. Like RS just said, more times than not there is a big difference between being a player that drops the hat and a sound tackler.

Was just sayin, that's all. Lord knows I'm the last cat the wants to start something over what players can "lay the wood". That thing just comes off the keyboard bad if ya know what I mean..... Wink
