The WR's coach was somehow affiliated with Mayhew and sent Mayhew an email about the guy, and then some video and apparantly Mayhews interested enough to pay for the guys flight from Germany to Detroit. There is an article about it on the Lions website and he looks more like a TE to me in the video and slower than the 4.48 and bigger than the 220. He had some really good hands, but made a few catches close to his body that should have been made a little farther out. His coach said he is such a hard worker that he's the kind of guy that if he is on the practice squad at the beggininng of the year, then he'll be on the active roster not too long into the season. I'd like to see what this guy can do. | Apparently we didn't sign him after his workout after running a slower than expected 40. His coach was surprised say maybe "It was the long plane ride, or something". He is apparently going back to Germany to continue to play for his team where he already has 5 touchdowns in 3 games (obviously against much lower competition though). I think he'd make a good TE convert. _________________ Kate Upton for sexy President!!!

I think he wouldn't make a good anything and that's why he is heading home on an airplane. _________________

| Quote: | “He was the one in this that did both,” Schwartz said after the mini-camp. “He played outside and inside. Everybody else we sort of kept at one position. But he’s a four-year starter at Oklahoma. He’s a smart guy and he’s had a lot of experience, so it’s easy for him to go do that.
“We value multi-dimensional linebackers – guys that are inside or outside because you’ve got to be able to do all those different things. I think that was important for him to be able to prove that he could. We thought that he could, but, again, you can tell those guys have been around the game. He has a lot of experience; he’s led his team in tackles for four years and all those different things.” |
| Quote: | The fact that coaches believe Lewis can play both spots makes him a good candidate to be the Lions’ fourth linebacker heading into camp. Doug Hogue, who the Lions drafted in the fifth round last year, will compete for that spot, too, but Lewis has as good a shot as anyone to win the job out of camp.
“I think he's maybe a more game-ready type of kid cause he's played so much football,” Lions linebackers coach Matt Burke said of Lewis. “I think he's got a chance to play football maybe sooner than some of the other guys even.” |
So much for questions about whether a 7th rd pick would be gauranteed a roster spot. Travis Lewis is already competing for the first reserve role off the bench. |

Quite a few posters really liked him because of his coverage skills, and ability to tackle- exactly what the Lions value at LB. _________________ Are you getting Ziggy with it? |

I loved him before he broke his foot and if he regains form look out.
It's easy to forget the impact Leis made his first three years at Oklahoma and concentrate on a year he PLAYED through multiple injuries.
I don't know why he fell all the way to the 7th but its lucky for the Lions he did. _________________

I love this mentality this time of year, and I hate how often it's devalued. Yes, he probably fell to the 7th round for a reason, but (at this point)... who cares? Him being a 7th round pick doesn't really sentence him to career backup-status, nor does it definitively say anything about his ability.
It's common for fans to disregard late-round picks based on their draft positioning, but NFL teams have only shown one thing when it comes to the draft: it is far from an exact science, and teams miss on a regular basis. It appears that Travis Lewis may be a hit, and, if that's the case, we're fortunate to have had the chance to get him where we did. _________________
