Surprised he went undrafted, Detroit Lions moved quickly to sign WR Patrick Edwards

Quote:
In four years with the Cougars, Edwards amassed 291 receptions, 4,507 yards and 43 touchdowns, finishing just behind Broyles in each category.

"We thought a lot of Patrick, and honestly, we were very surprised he didn't get drafted," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "He was a guy that we went to work on right away as soon as the draft was over."

Quote:
Edwards' measurables don't exactly pop up the chart. He stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs about 170 pounds. At his pro day he ran an uninspiring 4.58 and put up only five reps on the bench press, a distinct contrast to Broyles, who hoisted the bar 21 times.

Quote:
"It went good. It started out, they threw a lot of plays at us -- had to learn, get the routes down and everything," Edwards said. "As the days went on it got better -- made plays, caught the ball, just made a good impression on the coaches."

Edwards showed good hands all weekend and made one of the camp's most memorable plays, sneaking behind two defensive backs for a long touchdown reception on a deep flag route to the left sideline.

Quote:
Beyond his receiving skills, Edwards can also return kicks. He hasn't returned kickoffs since his freshman season at Houston, but he was one of the nation's better punt returners as a junior and senior. He averaged 14.7 yards per return and scored a pair of touchdowns over those two seasons.

What are your thoughts on Patrick Edwards?

Will he end up making the roster? Possibly earn a job over Stefan Logan?

Detfan is willing to bet 30 days no posting, and a couple months salary he won't.

No way the Lions keep two rookie WR's on their roster.

I bet he makes the team over Logan. Much, much more talented as a receiver and probably just as good as a returner.

He's gotta do well in camp and pre-season but I agree with this. I think he provides more upside Logan, plus he's cheaper.

And while he ran a 4.5 at his pro day he says he wasn't 100% coming off a torn quad, he's runs closer to 4.3.

Theres a shot he can make it. Injury slowed him down, get him healthy, and let him digest the playbook a little and we'll see. If he proves to be an effective returner at all, and also a semi-effective WR I'd keep him over Logan just cause Logan isn't much more than a gaggit type player with no true position except returner.

Logan was pretty tough as a KR throughout his career up until last year. He seemed to take a step back with fumbles though.

I'd love to see him rebound and come back as good as he was before but I'm not sure he is going to have the upside of Edwards. If he gets back to form he is probably a better returner than Edwards.

Did Logan play on kickoff coverage at all last year? I don't recall that he did??

Yeah, but he didn't provide much of an impact. Our coverage teams were garbage last season, and he definitely contributed to those problems.

Being that kickoff returning is pretty much a thing of the past, as well, I'd rather have the better receiver, and Edwards is far too much better in that department to keep Logan... my thoughts anyways.

UH fan here. Pat is an undersized receiver, but he was easily our best route runner on the team, could be a nice slot or deep threat receiver. I see him as nothing more than a 4th or 5th wr. (My friends who go to UH with me bashed me when I said that. They are obviously homers). He does however provide value as a punt returner. He could make the team, but I don't see how he does considered you guys have insane depth at WR. (Calvin, Nate, Titus, Broyles and Logan)

Logan is nothing more than a PR/KR, while Edwards could actually contribute as a receiver in the case of an injury. My pick is Edwards.

If Edwards can provide anything at WR I would take him over Logan as well.
