On tarvaris jackson, how things look for his 2012 season
| Quote: | Tarvaris Jackson earned the respect of his Seahawks teammates by playing through much of the 2011 with a torn pectoral muscle on his right side. Jackson never complained or made excuses. The injury made it tougher for Jackson to take hold of the starting job for the long term. The Seahawks' inability to make key plays in critical moments left them with a 7-9 record and kept them in the market for help at the position.
Jackson has gone from probable starter to potential roster casualty over the last two months. Seattle's signing of Matt Flynn from Green Bay in free agency made Jackson the presumed underdog in a two-man race for the starting job. The dynamic changed again when the Seahawks used a third-round choice for Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson, who subsequently impressed coaches during a recently completed rookie camp. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is now talking about a three-man race for the starting job.
The Seahawks acquired Jackson primarily for his knowledge of coordinator Darrell Bevell's offense during a lockout-shortened 2011 offseason. Sure, they hoped Jackson might turn into something more than a stopgap, but they entered into that relationship with the shorter term in mind. That is one reason Carroll broke from his competition mantra by installing Jackson as the starter heading into camp.
Circumstances are different now. The Seahawks targeted Flynn and Wilson as potential franchise quarterbacks, not as stopgap solutions. The team has a pretty good idea what Jackson offers. Expectations are higher for Flynn and Wilson. It's now an upset if Jackson wins the starting job. It's probably an upset if the Seahawks pay him $4 million in base salary, the figure spelled out for 2012 in the two-year deal Jackson signed in July 2011.
This is looking like a most challenging year for Jackson. |

Color Coding
This is how i have it broken down right now. Based on the reports that i get about these players (which i have already started archiving) i will set their "Competition Hue"....or something else when i find a better name. This will break down where they are in my opinion (tho i am more than open to the viewpoints of others). I will try to keep this updated weekly to let you guys gauge where they are. Once we get into june, i'll start posting rising and falling stock
Here it is:
Starter
Green-Locked In
In the Hunt
Olive-Front Runner and favorite for the job. Pretty much an announcement away
Blue-Showing the leadership to start, commanding attention. Immediate starter in the event of injury, at the very least, and creating some buzz around the league
Dark Blue-Making alot of plays, putting pressure on the competition and creating some buzz around the organization
Indigo-Drivers seat for #2, showing some starter quality
#2
Violet-Showing starter flashes, just outside of being "In the Hunt"
Yellow-In Contention for season long backup. Not quite ready to start, but should not be counted out
Orange-Not a contender, but doing enough to garner interest. Will see playing time in Second Halves of exhibition, and should see quality minutes in week 4
Red-Doing enough to be present on gameday, not much else
Bench/PS
Brown-Showing Promise in practice, could jump into next category
Dark Red-Making Plays, but nothing spectacular
Black-No Chance
We have:
Matt Flynn (expected 2012 starter)
Tarvaris Jackson (last seasons starter)
Russell Wilson (new draftee and darkhorse candidate)
Josh Portis (previous #3 on the DC and preseason stud)
I wish FF had a more elaborate coloring system, but this will do the job.
Feedback is appreciated _________________

he should, i agree. But i'm trying to be fair in this and do it off of the reports i've seen. At this point, there is no frontrunner in this race....especially because it hasn't even started yet. We're in the prelims right now
But your opinion is noted, i'm keeping track of what everyone says _________________

Agreed - barring injury there's a snowball's chance in hell he's not the Day1 starter.
If he stinks up the regular season and we're "out of it" by Week 13 (hope not but just as a scenario) - I can see them starting Wilson. You already know what TJax gives you as a starter (or rather what he doesn't give you), you might as well let the little guy try out as a starter and see some real NFL-speed action. _________________ GO SEAHAWKS GO!

8-8 or 9-7 best for Seattle. (& No Playoffs) |

| Quote: | According to Pro Football Weekly, Matt Flynn was "by far" the best quarterback at the Seahawks' first OTA practice open to the media.
Flynn stood out for his ability to "withstand pressure and avoid turnovers," and he remains on track to separate himself in training camp. The Seahawks have more OTAs beginning on Wednesday and lasting through Friday. It will be interesting to see whether Russell Wilson or Tarvaris Jackson's reps dwindle. |

A couple days older than the post above
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seahawks/2018281722_hawk25.html
| Quote: | If Thursday was any indication, it's going to be a tight battle.
No quarterback was sensational during the first organized team activity open to the media. Flynn, however, avoided turnovers and miscues that tormented the other two.
The former Green Bay Packer, who signed a three-year, $26 million deal in March, displayed good command of the offense while quickly getting the ball out of his hands and lofting passes for big gains.
"At this level, everybody is a competitor and everybody wants to win every snap," Flynn said. "It's kind of a lot of fun to chirp around with the defense and to talk back and forth. And get out there and see who wins the day."
Carroll said Jackson and Flynn had big days Wednesday, and Flynn appeared to continue the momentum Thursday.
The former Louisiana State player acknowledged that a highly scrutinized three-way quarterback competition can be taxing.
"You've got to be yourself," Flynn said. "You've got to go out there and you can't look at what the other guy is doing because you can't control it. You can control what you can do and try to beat yourself from the day before. You try to get better each day."
Carroll said he's equally dividing repetitions and time each quarterback gets to work with the starters.
Jackson took the bulk of the reps with the No. 1 offense Tuesday, and Flynn got the lion's share Wednesday. Thursday it was Wilson's turn.
During the noncontact practice, the 5-foot-11 rookie from Wisconsin was effective rolling out and scrambling.
However, he fumbled a snap and struggled at times throwing out of the pocket, particularly during an ugly four-play stretch in a seven-on-seven drill that included a sensational diving interception by safety Kam Chancellor and two overthrows.
Jackson also threw an interception when rookie linebacker Bobby Wagner picked off a short pass. Jackson had another attempt tipped and was whistled for a sack.
Otherwise, he zipped passes all over the field.
"They're all making progress," Carroll said. |

| Quote: | Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll continues to sound like he is not ready to hand QB Matt Flynn the team's starting quarterback job. Carroll continues to stress competition at the position. "Hopefully we'll figure this thing out as we go." Carroll said. "There's no choice we have other than to give these guys reps and have them show us where they're coming from. We see a lot of stuff from T-Jack coming back. It's interesting to see Matt as he fits together with this thing. He's come along very quickly and then also Russell is exciting and we got to see where he fits in, too. He's just such a tremendous athlete. So we're excited about this."

This might be the one thing that just wholeheartedly grinds my gears about Pete. He's so engulfed in this "competition" crap that he won't just say "look, Flynn looks a lot better, he's got hold on the job until someone else steps up".
It's obvious from all reports that Flynn is the best QB. _________________

| I think it's because the track record of QBs like Flynn isn't that good. Carroll is not exactly interested in Matt Moores, and I'm not sure we'll see Good Delhomme. Unfortunately, I don't think we will find out for sure until about game 5. |

Jackson Not looking so hot, according Brock Huard
http://blog.thenewstribune.com/seahawks/2012/06/01/morning-links-same-old-mistakes-for-jackson/
| Quote: | Brock Huard of ESPN 710 Seattle offers his impressions of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson after watching this week’s OTA practice open to the media on Wednesday.
Huard came away from Wednesday’s practice feeling the same way he felt about Jackson last year – a talented thrower with a strong arm that still makes the same mistakes that a seven-year veteran in the league should not make.
Huard: First and foremost, on a day where Tarvaris Jackson took a majority of the reps with the starters, it has become clear that Jackson peaked in his third year in the league and has not been able to rise from that plateau. He may be very well-liked and even more respected, but the inconsistency of his game as he enters his seventh year in the same system is maddening.
One play he shows the zip to fire an option route into a very tight window; the next play he throws an errant interception to a safety sitting right over the top of a downfield post route. One play he effortlessly zings a deep in-cut 25 yards on a rope; the next play he sits under center for an inappropriate amount of time, misses the check and leaves his offensive coordinator with his hands on his hips.
It is hard to imagine Jackson as anything more than a journeyman backup, and at $4.5 million in base salary scheduled for 2012, I’d be willing to bet that in August he’ll get the Leroy Hill/Sean Locklear/Marcus Trufant treatment: renegotiate, or else. |

Its really to bad TJ hasent been able to improve as a QB the past four years and cut out the mental errors. Me thinks his days are limited at this point. I doubt he is going to be happy being a 3rd string QB, which is probably what he should be in Seattle. I was rooting for ya TJ! |
