I was just commenting in the Jenkins thread about using Johnson exclusively as a single safety in a 4 CB nickel package as a way to take advantage of his talents while only giving him one package to learn at first.
Another idea I like is a 5-1-5 nickel. With Lee and Carter's range and Lee's demonstrated cover ability, plus (assuming we keep Jenkins) the ability to put four CBs in man coverage gives us, I think, the ability to play some interesting 6 man coverage packages while rushing 5 (Ware/Lissemore/Ratliff/Crawford/Spemcer, perhaps?)
What are some personnel packages or formations you'd like to see? _________________

| Quote: | By keeping Jenkins, it really gives Ryan a lot to work with in the secondary. Here would be our base formation in a regular secondary package:
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Pool/Johnson
RSafety - Sensabaugh
RCB - Claiborne
When we go to our nickel package (something we ran quite a lot last year if I recall correctly), Ryan could really get creative if he wanted to, and run something like this:
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Pool/Johnson
RSafety - Jenkins
Nickel - Scandrick
RCB - Claiborne
Jenkins isn't exactly ever been a slouch in coverage, and with his recent willingness to stick his neck out there and make a tackle, he'd be great as a rover in the backfield alongside Pool or Johnson. This would allow Scandrick to play the nickel, which is his strong suit and still keep Claiborne and Carr on the field as well. Not to mention give us three players (four if you want to count Scandrick) who have been known to create turnovers. |
Our "base" 3-4 defense
LDE - Spears/Crawford
NT - Ratliff
RDE - Lissemore
SOLB - Spencer
SILB - Lee
WILB - Carter/Connor
WOLB - Ware
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Pool
RSafety - Sensabaugh
RCB - Claiborne
A "base" 4-3 Formation
LDE - Spencer or Wilber or Crawford
NT - Brent or Lissemore or Spears
UT - Ratliff
RDE - Ware
SLB - Connor
MLB - Lee
WLB - Carter
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Pool
RSafety - Sensabaugh
RCB - Claiborne
A 4-2-5 package (as you mentioned)
LDE - Spencer/Wilber/Butler
NT - Brent/Lissemore/Spears
UT - Ratliff
RDE - Ware
SILB - Lee
WILB - Carter/Connor
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Johnson
RSafety - Jenkins
RCB - Claiborne
Nickel - Scandrick
A 3-3-5 Package
LDE - Spears
NT - Ratliff
RDE - Lissemore
SOLB - Carter/Connor
MLB - Lee
WOLB - Ware
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Johnson
RSafety - Jenkins
RCB - Claiborne
Nickel - Scandrick
A 5-2-4 "Shoot The Gap" Formation
LDE - Brent
LDT - Ratliff
RDT - Ware
RDE - Spears
3DE - Lissemore
SILB - Lee
WILB - Carter
LCB - Carr
LSafety - Johnson
RSafety - Sensabaugh
RCB - Claiborne

why that D line? I see us getting killed on outside runs and quick passes to a RB.
I don't see the purpose of having Spears and Brent as DE's in that formation. _________________ The lonely supporter of Phil Costa..

The idea is to get to the QB as soon as possible. Who would you favor in a matchup? Ware or a center? Spears and Brent are there to draw double teams away from Ware and Ratliff to try and get to the QB in a split second.
You have Lee and Carter, two players who are known for their sideline-to-sideline ability in the middle to prevent those quick passes and outside runs from burning the team in case the inside rushers don't get to the QB right away. Johnson could also play closer to the line of scrimmage, sort of like a 3rd linebacker, to provide aid as well. _________________

No rational human being should want to use any gimmick college defense at any point. A 5-1-5, 4-2-5, or a 3-3-5? Really??? Are you people nuts? When defenses like that give up massive amounts of yardage and points at the collegiate level, how much do you think they'd give up at the pro level?
Seriously, those defenses are NOT the way to go. _________________

Maybe not your traditional packages you see at the college level, but we've seen them used in different variations at the pro level before. If I'm not mistaken, Ryan has used somewhat similar formations before and they've been effective. _________________

Um... doesn't just about everybody in the NFL run out one of those two as a nickel package at some point every game? _________________

I love the 3-3-5! That is the base Defense I would run if I was a coach. _________________

MH, when Dirk asked you to list the "packages" you'd like to see, he was referring to "football" packages. _________________ Quote from May 7, 2013...

On 3rd-and-long, I would like to see a 1-4-6 package.
DL - Ratliff
LBs - Ware, Lee, Carter, Spencer, and Butler/Wilbur
DBs - Carr, Jenkins, Claiborne, Scandrick, Pool, and Sensabaugh.
Have the LBs and 2 safeties moving around the line of scrimmage with all of them showing blitz. Then have two of them moving back in coverage - with one safety going deep and one LB (even Ware) playing deep middle or covering the TE. _________________
