As Brian Urlacher prepares for his 13th NFL season, it also could be his final one with the Bears. Urlacher, who turned 34 on Friday, celebrated his birthday by proclaiming in a radio interview that he may give free agency a whirl in 2013.

Urlacher: “I think [Bears president] Ted Phillips said when they had the owners meeting they’re gonna wait until the season is over. See what happens, how I play. It’s kind of exciting. I’ve never been a free agent. So if I can get to free agency we’ll see what happens. I no doubt want to finish my career here. There’s no doubt about that. But you bring in free agency and all that you just never know what’s gonna happen.”

I would not be surprised if the Bears let him go. How many yrs are you going to sign a 35 yr old to?

2 years....that should be enough time for the replacement we draft to get ready.
Now I would do that but it could change.

Urlacher will be here until he's 40. This isn't Forte Hester or Briggs, this is the heart and soul of the team. He'll retire a Bear without ever playing for another team, and you can quote me on that.

Bears will somewhat overpay Urlacher to functionally a two year deal with some outrageous 3rd-4th year numbers for show.

When the 3rd year hits, we renegotiate his salary, he cuts 20 pounds and becomes a 225 pound safety until he's 41 or 42 where he gets a new facemask, does a Blanda and becomes our field goal kicker until he's 48 or 49.

Then he retires from the game, but does a Forest Gump and starts mowing the grass at Soldier Field, but even though the Bears have switched it to field turf, nobody has the guts to tell him.

That's the most realistic outcome to me.

Fantastic

Well put...he has become the face of this franchise and has been for many years now...he is not Kreutz so the comparison in the article about how the Bears just let him walk is not relevant to this conversation IMO. Urlacher will never wear another uniform, I firmly believe that.
