So a couple of days ago I was listening to Mike and Mike on my local Four Letter Network Radio Station and they were discussing that if Lebron James won a championship which current athlete in sports would face the most pressure to win a championship.

Mike Greenberg stated that our beloved quarterback Tony Romo has the most pressure to win a ring out of any current athlete in sports.

Since this is the off season and there isn't a whole lot currently going on I though I would ask the forum the question and since this a football forum I am going to revise the question a little bit "Do you believe that Tony Romo has the most pressure out of any current playing non Super Bowl wining quarterback to win a Super Bowl?"

Start listening around 10:20-10:50 to hear Mike Greenberg talk about it

Probably, but only because he plays for "America's Team"

Well, let's look at other high profile athletes from other sports who faced similar pressure (given the conditions within their respective sports):

Sidney Crosby: Check
A-Rod: Check
LeBron James: Check
Kobe Bryant winning without Shaq: Check

So yes, at this point, he's probably under the most pressure now that LeBron has won one.

Well now Durant is gonna be under a lot of scrutiny, so we'll see

I agree, but he's not in a high profile city nor a household name like the others I listed so I don't expect the expectations to be as high with him as they are with Romo or the other "big named" athletes.

Don't get me wrong, Durant is a big named player, but he's in the 2nd tier of superstar athletes because he hasn't broken through the glass ceiling into true athletic super-stardom yet. I think he can, and I think he will, but he hasn't done so yet.

I see where you're coming from. Romo for sure has the whole city on his shoulders at this point

Durant is only 23. Romo is 32. So, I think Durant probably has 2-3 years before the pressure really builds up. I think Carmelo Anthony has more pressure to perform than Durant does.

Does Romo have more pressure than Vick to win a championship? I would argue the entire Eagles organization, and thus Vick, have more pressure than Romo and the Boys to win a SB immediately. The Eagles have fielded some great teams on paper over the past 12 years, but they can't get over the hump.

Peyton Manning will be under heavy scrutiny in Denver. Maybe not this year, as he's returning from an injury, but definitely next season.

Dwight Howard definitely has more scrutiny than Romo, Durant, etc. He and Carmelo will have the spotlight shone on them next year, especially the former should he leave Orlando.

People like my mother (casual fans for sports other than football) have no idea who Kevin Durant is but know the names of every other athlete I mentioned because they're the elite players who transcend their respective sport. Durant is not that person yet. So stop looking at it through the lens of a knowledgeable basketball fan and look at it through the lens of a casual sports fan who pays little attention to players and teams. They don't know Kevin Durant nearly as well as the others because he isn't a superstar nor a household name to anyone who doesn't follow basketball. Guys like A-Rod, Romo, LeBron, etc. are household names even if you don't know the teams they play for because their names and brands are greater than the sport. Durant's name and brand is not greater than the sport he plays in.

Plan, how many NBA basketball players can your mom name if she doesn't know Durant?

Durant was top-10 in international jersey sales. He was #5 in All Star fan voting (Behind just Lebron, Kobe, Dwight Howard, and Derrick Rose, who are all clear superstars). The Thunder got a ton of publicity on their march to the finals. Add that to the fact that Durant has become pretty much the clear-cut 2nd best player in the NBA, and you have a true super star.

So I'm sorry, but your "my mom hasn't heard of them" evidence doesn't really hold up in this debate.

Oh Christ, will you people READ FOR A CHANGE? Casual fans don't vote in all star games, nor do they buy jerseys. There is a difference between being known by fans of the sport versus being known regardless of the sport you play in. And I wasn't talking about my mother specifically; I was referring to people who don't pay close attention to sports. Kevin Durant is NOT well known by that collection of people. He's not in the same stratosphere of stardom of guys like Romo, LeBron, Tiger Woods, A-Rod, Peyton Manning, etc. Those guys are global superstars because their brands/celebrities are just as, if not more, well known than their play. Kevin Durant is well known by basketball fans, not by his brand. How on Earth can you not recognize the difference?

I've provided you with evidence that he is, in fact, one of the most popular players in the NBA.

Please provide me with some legitimate evidence that backs up your argument besides, "my mom hasn't heard of him".

NYFDB, READ my posts, and maybe then you'll understand why your point hold little value. You clearly didn't read them because you're harping on something which I used as an allegory. As I said, I was not, and I repeat NOT referencing my mother, but referencing casual sports fans, which you either ignored or overlooked. Re-read the post, think about it for a while, and maybe you'll get it. I wrote it quite clearly, so you shouldn't misunderstand it.

My point is about BRANDING and marketing, NOT talent or jersey sales. Dude, you went to college. You should understand Marketing 101. Durant has not reached that level yet. It's not hard to figure out.

I know far more about marketing than Marketing 101. But certainly one fact is that good marketing sells. Now what measure of sales could we possibly use to measure that? Jersey sales maybe? Hm...

In fact, one most important things I learned as a marketing major is the value of building a brand for your target market (read: if Plan9's mom is not the target market, it doesn't matter all that much if she doesn't know that you exist). So even if these arbitrarily defined "casual fans" don't know who Kevin Durant is, that doesn't stop him from being a superstar.

Also, I don't know why you are getting so upset about the mother thing. The fact that your mom doesn't know who Kevin Durant exists, is the best and only evidence you have brought to the table. Not sure why you'd want that point changed. Everything else you have said is pure conjecture.
