ESPN analysts: Detroit Lions near 'dominance' and could 'sneak in' to Super Bowl
| Quote: | | The Detroit Lions may not be ready to surpass the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North, but that doesn't mean ESPN's Cris Carter and Bill Polian don't have high expectations. |
| Quote: | | Carter added: "I believe Detroit could sneak in and represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. They have that type of young talent on their roster. Might be a year or two away." |
| Quote: | Polian suggested it could be the only thing holding Detroit back.
"They're this close, talent-wise, to being a great football team," Polian said. "They've got really everything you need except for the dominant running back. Everything else is in place. But these kinds of distractions are problems, and they've got to get it solved." |
When asked to pick a breakout player within the division both analysts picked the Lions...
| Quote: | "I think it's going to be Titus Young of Detroit, because Megatron (Calvin Johnson) is going to get so much coverage his way that another receiver can make a lot of money over there," Polian said.
"I'm going with Mikel Leshoure, the running back. He's going to break out in Week 3 because he's suspended the first two weeks. He's going to have a big year," Carter said. |
When asked about the division's best defensive player Carter picked Jared Allen, and Polian picked Suh...
| Quote: | "This guy does it all," Polian said. "And it's hardest position to find in the National Football League, a defensive tackle who can play the run and is a dominant pass rusher. He's the man."
|
| Quote: | | • Carter took several opportunities to mock himself for being down on Johnson last season, and even suggested he could challenge Randy Moss' single-season record of 22 touchdown catches. |
How realistic do you think the Lions Super Bowl chances are?
Who would you pick for a breakout player in the NFC North?
Who do you think is the best defensive player in the division? _________________

| Lions are a top 10 team in the NFL right now so of course they can compete for the Super Bowl. The concern Lions fans should have are the numerous character issues on the team and whether that will bring them down again this year. Look at the Giants last year the Packers the year before, it was as much team chemistry that got them a Super Bowl ring as talent. Do the Lions have that chemistry we will see soon enough. |

Its a big year for Detroit, Lions have to prove that last year wasent a flash in the pan, getting out the division wont be easy at all with Chicago and obviously Green Bay...
but the next step for our franchise to grow would be a mini playoff run...once you get in there, anything can happen. Personally were a year or 2 away IMO from a potential Superbowl appearnce... _________________

I mean... I hate to say it... but we gotta go through GB and the Giants and S.F. isn't a joke either. IDK, without the season here I don't know what to say because obviously it could change with a injury, etc, but as of now I'd put the Lions in the top 5 teams from the NFC with the possibility of reaching the super bowl. Not sure if they'd win if they got there but I only see 3 maybe 4(Bears) that could knock us out.
Maybe the Eagles/Cowboys bounce back too but I'm not seeing it personally.
As far as break out players, it's easy to go with Mikeal Leshoure. It's assumed he'll get alot of carriers, he had talent, and his injury is over a year ago(by the time he plays).
Defensive stars I'm going with Ndamukong Suh also. Polian said it about right and well... Suh is also my favorite player. |

If the lions get into the super bowl, it will be anything but sneaky. _________________

I wouldn't be shocked if we kinda took a step back under the lofty expectations. Could see an 8-8/9-7 season and miss the playoffs.
I think Randall Cobb will be the breakout player in the division. Last thing GB needs is another weapon. _________________

No way. Not with the current secondary they have. No way at all.
If you are takes the odds though I guess they would not be a bad team to put some on. _________________

The Patriots and Giants just played in the Super Bowl. There's no way you're going to argue that either team's secondary was better than the Lions' last season. |

Yes. I would take theirs over what Deroit had. NE struggles were front 7 leaving secondary to hang.
NYG issue was the LBs. _________________

I would say, for the first time since Barry, the Lions are realistic long shot. I wouldn't call them a favorite or even a solid contender, but I wouldn't say it's a total pipe dream like in previous years. _________________

Let me first say that I consider the Lions a huge threat as a Packers fan. I however can't consider you a huge super bowl threat until you win your first playoff game and do it convincingly. After that, Stafford and Calvin can do it if they are playing well enough and Pettigrew is complimenting the offense as well as he does. _________________

Honestly? Yeah. I can't see us winning a Super Bowl at least until we've won a playoff game. For anyone who remembers Waldo, I also think his "superior team" theory and formula had/has a ton of credence. I'm still waiting for some "hot new NFL analyst!" to come forward with that on NFL network or something. Then I could shout, "I kinda sorta not really know that guy! He's a total snob!"
Anyway, I'm just hoping to make the playoffs this year for now. Once we get there, I'll hope we win a game. Once that happens, I'll go from there. _________________

It's possible. Not likely, but possible.
Once you get into the playoffs anything can happen, and the Lions have the talent to get there. _________________
