2013 Off-Season Simulation Information

Introduction
This sim will go from about July 5 – August 8th (or so). I hope to get 31 other committed “General Managers”, but if not 16 committed GMs would suffice. I would say if we are forced to double up, each GM would take one AFC squad and one NFC squad. I plan on GM’ing the Houston Texans

Rosters / Salary Cap
Spreadsheets I have created already include the following:
- Players under contract for next season, ERFA, RFA, & UFA (posted by team)
Posted to Google Docs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ap2T-yKMVeLJdHJvczZZRjRsdHRtS2o0QVVQMGF5NlE

- Salary cap: 7% over 2012 cap of $120M = $128.4M
- Compensatory picks: Check Draft order thread (Draft order primarily based off of recent NFL Power Rankings)

Projected franchise tag / RFA amounts

2013 Franchise tag amounts
QB: $15M RB: $8.5 WR: $10M TE: $6M OL: $10M
DE: $11M DT: $9M LB: $9.5M CB: $11M S: $7M K / P: $3.5M

Restricted Free agency amounts
1st round tender = $3M
2nd round tender = $2M
Right of first refusal / original round tender = $1.5M

I would also welcome input so I can make changes to any incorrect information (e.g. ERFA or RFA plus contract related info, etc.).

Timetable
Here’s a projected timetable:
1) Sign-ups: now through Aug. 1st
2) Create depth chart: now through Aug. 1st
3) Decide on ERFA & RFA signings + Decide on franchise tags: now through Aug. 1st
4) Re-structures (up to 3 players) & re-signings (up to 5 players – with fair / reasonable contracts): now through Aug. 1st
5) Prior to Free Agency (roster at 60)
6) Free agency (highest bid wins; no competing bids after 12 hours & player is yours)
QB + specialists – Aug. 2nd
RB & FB – Aug. 3rd
WR & TE – Aug. 4th
OL – Aug. 5th
DL – Aug. 6th
LB – Aug. 7th
DB – Aug. 8th
7) Open Day (for planning trades, cuts, final free agent signings) – July 23rd
Draft (roster at 60) (all juniors eligible) (red shirt sophomores only available in 1st 2 rounds of draft)
1st round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 10th & 11th
2nd round (1hour slots) – Aug. 12th & 13th
3rd round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 14th & 15th
4th round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 16th & 17th
5th round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 18th & 19th
6th round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 20th & 21st
7th round (1 hour slots) – Aug. 22nd & 23rd

9) After draft, sign undrafted free agents (roster to 53 + 8 man PS) – Aug, 24th

Please PM or post below if you are interested.

Sample Restructure
WR Andre Johnson
Original Contract (remaining)
2013 Base Salary $6.2M + $1.72M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $10.35M cap hit
2014 Base Salary $6.5M + $1.72M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $10.65M cap hit
2015 Base Salary $10.5M + $1.16M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $14.09M cap hit
2016 Base Salary $11M + $1.16M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $14.59M cap hit

Restructured Contract
2013 Base Salary $840K + $3.06 SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $6.33M cap hit
2014 Base Salary $6.5M + $3.06M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $11.99M cap hit
2015 Base Salary $10.5M + $2.5 SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $15.43M cap hit
2016 Base Salary $11M + $2.5M SB + $2.43M Other Bonus = $15.93M cap hit

$840K = veteran minimum
Subtract the veteran minimum from what would have been the base salary ($6.2M)
The subtracted amount ($5.36M) is converted into signing bonus that can be spread over the remaining years of the contract (in this scenario, 4 years)
$5.36M divided by 4 years = $1.34M per year
$1.34M is added to the signing bonus amount for each remaining year
The goal is creating cap space in 2013.
By restructuring Andre Johnson’s contract for 2013, the team created an additional $4.02M in cap room!

Remember: base salaries are not guaranteed, but signing bonus money is! So by agreeing to restructure his contract Andre Johnson (1) helps his team remain competitive by being able to sign free agents and (2) increases the amount of money that is guaranteed to come his way.

If you need assistance on a restructure, please let me know.

Contract Proposal / Re-signing (sample)

The Texans want to keep LT Duane Brown. Duane Brown will be 28 headed into the 2013 – 2014 season and likely coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance.

Consequently, he will likely want to be paid like a top LT in the NFL. A contract that averages about $11M per year will put him among the Top 5 highest paid tackles in the league.

Maximum length contract for an unrestricted free agent is seven (7) years IIRC.

So the contract would have the parameters of something like 7 years, $77M with $7M signing bonus and $44M guaranteed

T Duane Brown
2013: $8.5M base + $1M SB = $9.5M cap hit (fully guaranteed)
2014: $9M base + $1M SB = $10M cap hit (fully guaranteed)
2015: $9.5M base + $1M SB= $10.5M cap hit (fully guaranteed)
2016: $10M base + $1M SB = $11M cap hit (fully guaranteed)
2017: $10.5M base + $1M SB = $11.5M cap hit
2018: $11M base + $1M SB = $12M cap hit
2019: $11.5M base + $1M SB = $12.5M cap hit

If you need assistance on a re-signing, please let me know.

RFA / ERFA
None of the contracts of exclusive restricted free agents (ERFA) or restricted free agents (RFA) are currently included in most team’s budgets.
On each team’s spreadsheet is included the cost of retaining ERFAs or RFAs.

Current Team GMs

After careful research, I PM’d a potential representative for each team. I tried to invite individuals who had shown (1) knowledge of their favorite team and (2) a commitment to seeing things through to the end.

Unfortunately, many people were too busy to fully commit to this simulation. As such, I am opening up GM spots for several teams (see below). Please volunteer only if you can meet the two aforementioned criteria. Now, let’s have some fun and look to Football’s Future (in 2013)!

Well, since the schedule says we can start resigning our free agents today, I did so and included that with the cuts I'm making in my depth chart post. If anyone thinks my offers weren't fair, or catches a math error with my cap space let me know.

Brief overview of the basic contracts below for ease of viewing.
1. Jairus Byrd, FS: 5 year $42m with a $10m signing bonus. $5m hit in 2013.
2. Andy Levitre, LG: 5 year $24m with a $7m signing bonus. $3.4m hit in 2013.
3. Brian Moorman, P: 4 year $6.5m. $1.5m hit in 2013.
4. Dorin Dickerson, FB: 2 year $1.26m. $630k hit in 2013.

UPDATE: Sorry for any confusion. You can sign as many of your ERFA & RFA as the salary cap will allow. However, you are limited to signing five (5) of your UFAs.

If people think this should be amended / changed please let me know and state your justification. I thought keeping 5 UFA would be somewhat realistic and ensure that there is some movement in free agency. But I am willing to listen to ideas. (I want this to be OUR sim.) Very Happy

If you find errors in the salary cap #'s, please feel free to let me know. Philly gained $5M in space and Chicago gained $10M just by being aware of their team's player contracts. So if you find a mistake, let me know so I can update the numbers!

Also, as time runs short - we may need to consider doubling up. We reached 16 GM's today and just by coincidence we have 8 AFC & 8 NFC GMs - meaning we could all grab one other team from another conference.

However, I am going to keep plugging away at trying to find more GM's - I think someone who is a fan of a team would really do it justice IMHO. Plus, I think it makes it better to have more people involved. But 16 committed GM's is better than 32 non-interested GMs.

Also, THANK YOU to everyone who is working away on this. I was worried before, but glad we are building momentum.

So when it comes to our 3 restructures & 5 resignings do we just post the contract terms and as long as they aren’t really undervalued they stand or do we have to submit them to a council for a decision on them?...

Same goes for trades...are we having a trade council?

I would think as long as they are not ridiculously low or illegal, they will stand.

I would say all GM's are a council so if 25% (4) say "foul", it may require some defense by the submitting GM.

If we are restructuring a player contract can we add on additional years?

That my friend was a question I was afraid of. I would say Yes (because it is a legitimate and common action), but I would like to hear from other GM's about that....

I don't think anyone is likely to complain. Adding additional years beyond 2013 isn't really going to have much impact on a 2013 off-season simulation. Besides, the rules only allow three.

2015…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $2.25 million = $3.25 million
2016…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $2.50 million = $3.50 million
2017…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $2.75 million = $3.75 million

D.J Moore…

Total Contract = 5 years $16.5 million including $11.5 million in guarantees

2013…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $1.75 million = $2.75 million
2014…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $2.00 million = $3.00 million
2015…Base $1.0 million + Guaranteed $2.25 million = $3.25 million

One other thing: via PM I got a GREAT suggestion - If you know of someone who likes to participate in Sims, please feel free to contact them personally regarding the GM-less teams in this sim.

Obviously, I think we would all prefer a GM who is a fan of the team, but I think we could all be amenable to others joining the party. So feel free to spread the word via PM.

Yeah I don’t think it would cause too much problems either…the only thing I would disagree to is if a player is owed $12 million in 1 year and someone wants to restructure his contract to $15 million over 3 years then that would be a problem…but if substantial money was being added say from $9 million in year to $21 million over 3 years…that would be pretty realistic IMO.

Personally I would love to be able to sign more than 5 of my own FA, simply as most of my starting Defence is a FA.

But, I understand the rules Crying or Very sad
