Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wins ESPY award for Best Comeback Athlete
| Quote: | Accepting the award live at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Stafford dedicated the honor to two groups, starting with his brothers in arms.
"I just want to thank my teammates," he said. "It was a long couple of years and they stuck with me -- the coaching staff, the owners, the GM, everybody. I can't thank them enough for sticking with me, trusting me and understanding something great can happen." |
| Quote: | Stafford also thanked the city he now calls home.
"I just want to say how thankful I am to share this with the city of Detroit that's on a comeback of its own. The city has been through a lot and we're just one of the teams there that are trying to make them happy and proud, give them something to cheer for." |
Nominees for the award:
Maria Sharapova
Matthew Stafford
Sidney Crosby
Johan Santana
Who would you have picked?
Any thoughts on Stafford winning or the speech he gave after?
When Stafford's career is all said and done how do you think he will be remembered? How successful will he be? Will he spend his entire career here and do you even want him to? _________________

This award was Stafford all day. Absolutely loved how he said it was for the city of Detroit and how the city is making a comeback.
Do I want him to be here for awhile? Yes please |

Stafford should have and did win. Santana hasn't been back a full season yet. Crosby hasn't played a full season. He came back and got hurt again. Sharapovas issues were mental and she did well recently, but overall, her "comeback" hasn't been nearly as impressive as Stafford missing basically a year and a half and having a top 5 season all-time.
Good for him to get the recognition. |
