Tarkenton, then a huge drop off, huge....

Moon, more than 1 year of success
Favre/Cunningham - 1 great year where both should have been in a SB, but nothing much else
Kramer/Culpepper/Kapp - tough call here, as I always figure Kapp is one of those guys that gets credit for being a winner, when it is a team game and it's hard to say how good he really was. The other two were average to good, with an occassional very good year, but had short impacts of good play.

Frankly, I think Brad Johnson is underestimated some....as is possibly Wade Wilson....this position is like a MLB starting rotation, a number 2, and a bunch of number 3-4 types. Great if you can play more than one (or over a long season like baseball), but not so great if you play 1 time a week for 16 weeks....

an article on Culpepper and how some thought he'd become the Vikings' all-time best QB:

Interesting opinion from Cris Carter:

Quote:
I put a lot to stock in a conversation with Cris Carter at the 2006 Super Bowl. He was rooting for a Culpepper comeback, but also said:

"Daunte is the least- confident great athlete I've been around."

Culpepper's issues always seemed to stem from the mental aspects of his game. Sensing pressure, going through reads, knowing when to cover up and not drop the ball on the ground (happened far too often). Im not surprised to see Carter express concern about Culpepper's mental toughness.

One thing to remember about Kapp is that he won at least one Grey Cup (championship) in Canada before getting to the NFL. He was good enough for the great Bud Grant to bring him in. Kapp was a little before my time, however I've really come to admire his toughness and leadership.

At the time it wasn't that uncommon for players to make the jump from the CFL to the NFL, because the talent gap (and pay gap) between the two leagues was nowhere near what it is now. If anything Kapp was a notch below Ron Lancaster and Russ Jackson as a CFL QB. Joe Theismann didn't have that great a CFL career either (although he came later).

Some day, I really hope either Joe Webb or Christian Ponder make this list.

and hypothetically speaking, lets say at some point the Vikings win the Superbowl, should that QB then be considered the best QB in Vikings history?

Not necessarily...otherwise, Ravens' fans would have to consider Trent Dilfer the best QB in the organization's history. Laughing

It's a case by case situation. You have to take into account the QB's whole body of work. If his whole body of work ends up similar to Fran Tarkenton's, then winning the Super Bowl would give that QB an edge. IMO, the Super Bowl just gives them bonus points.

keep in mind Tarkenton, who is considered our best qb historically, was the losing qb in three Super Bowls.
