On the field Monday afternoon, all eyes were on Jared Allen and Matt Kalil.

Opening up the team session with 11-on-11 drills, Kalil held his own against Allen as Christian Ponder went 3-for-4 passing. Allen spent much of the first session bull-rushing the rookie trying to overpower the 6'7", 308lb tackle. During the second session, Allen began to mix it up a bit while Kalil did his best to keep up.

Allen's barrage of swim moves, spins and pure power during the second match up got the best of Kalil. My unofficial count had Jared Allen in on the quarterback for one, maybe two touch sacks as the veteran's combination of speed and strength proved to be too much for the rookie.

Following the 11-on-11 session, the offensive and defensive linemen moved over to the middle field for 1-on-1 work, Allen and Kalil were first out of the gates. The goal of the drill was for the offensive line to protect a cone on the ground while the defense attempted to "sack" (grab) the cone. While Allen never technically got to the cone, he was seen beating Kalil around the edge prompting Allen to perform Cartwheels and raise his helmet and run around the field circa Brett Favre and Super Bowl XXXI.

When asked to judge his performance, Kalil, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, said: "It was a good first day. There's always something I can improve on. I was rusty on some things. You only get better at those things by practicing in pads. I'm looking forward to getting better every day."

There isnt a better 4-3 DE in the league than Allen, so Kalil will get challenged everyday. should aide significantly in his growth.

While not directly related to the topic of this thread, this is a pretty good article on Allen:

Quote:
In offseasons past, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen fancied himself as a bit of a thrill seeker. He went skydiving in Arizona; bagged a red stag and bungee jumped in New Zealand; and hunted black bear in the Selkirk Mountains in northern Idaho. Did we also mention that he ran with the bulls in Pamplona?

This year, he dialed it back. Way back. He mostly spent time at home with his wife, Amy, and their nine-month-old daughter, Brinley Noelle.

"That's the greatest thing ever," Allen said, "just being a dad."

Matt Kalil just stonewalled Jared Allen two snaps in a row in one on ones. Allen cursed loudly. #Vikings

Laughing I laughed so hard when I saw this because I can just picture Allen doing this.

You have to love rivalries like this. In my opinion, it says a lot about how Allen has treated Kalil. There's a lot of respect coming from Allen when he talks about Kalil, which is a great thing to see from a veteran like #69. And it's great to see that Kalil not only is up for the challenge of going up against Allen, but relishes it and seems to be able to hold his own.

Jared Allen: "I always try to get the sack record. Every year, I try to dominate the league. You never know when it's going to be your last year."

"They're probably going to drop that on me towards the beginning of the season (limiting snaps played), and I'll get really pissed at them. I'm willing to do anything to win, but I don't like coming off the field. You want to rest me, rest me during the week because I get paid to play on Sunday. If I'm on the field, I feel I can make a play to help our team win."

Not much has surprised Minnesota Vikings rookie left tackle Matt Kalil in his first two weeks of camp. The occasional Jared Allen edge rush reminds him of the game's elite speed, but he considers the overall experience "a great transition for me." Kalil says the offensive similarities between the Vikings and USC accelerated his learning curve.

"I pride myself on having great technique, trying to do everything right," the Vikings' first-round pick said. "I think (Southern California) prepared me pretty well for that."

As for Allen, he's had his way with Kalil a few times, but the rookie has held up nicely for the most part.

"He's helped me a lot to become a better player," Kalil said.
