Positives:
- Wilson is going to be a stud
- Aside from the muff, Hosely looked great
- Herzlich will be challenging Blackburn for starting MLB midseason
- Rivers looked pretty good on the first defensive series
- Bennett had a nice TD
- Randle had a Hakeem-esque touchdown
- Tracy, Hendricks, and Broha were impressive on the dline
Negatives:
- Amukamara got picked apart on that one drive
- Jernigan didn't really impress me that much
- All the muffed punts
- Offensive line wasn't all that impressive against the Jags first team |

Alright Giant fans, can you help me out? I was out work during the game so I'd like to hear from the opposition:
1. How did Blaine Gabbert look?
2. What about Rashad Jennings?
3. Any of our receivers look good? _________________

-Gabbert showed nice short ball accuracy on the first drive, sometimes even under pressure on third downs. Deep he was eh, more taking advantage of badly blown coverages. There was nothing in the performance that suggested he was a high pick, but it's just August so I'll give him a mulligan.
-I liked Jennings. Good at getting the extra yards and didn't dance.
-I only watched the first quarter or so and Robinson looked okay. Thomas too but it was too easy for him. _________________

Pretty much accomplishment 1a right there.
Other less significant take aways:
David Wilson is dynamic, should be a huge help in the return game. Still need to see him run the ball between the tackles. I have no doubt he can break outside and make plays.
Martellus Bennett is in store for a break out season. Eli hasn't had a TE this athletic since Shockey. Hopefully Bennett will realize the great situation he has been brought into, work hard, and stay humble. Tonight was a taste of things to come.
Our starting DL and depth is the best in the league.
The LB corps are a work in progress, but we have some decent options to work with.
Rueben Randall looks like a clone of Nicks. Back-shoulder-throws-a-plenty for Eli in 2012.
Prince looks a little shaky, to be honest our secondary as a whole is still a little worrisome. We are gonna need Prince this year, hopefully he's ready by September.
Lastly, how great is David Carr's job? All he has to do is make a few preseason cameos, hold a clipboard, and collect SB rings. _________________ W O R L D C H A M P I O N S '86, '90, '07, '11 |

Here are my opinions on last night’s game:
Offense:
-For being the first preseason game I think Eli looked good. Used to him being rusty and out of sync with the wideouts, but he threw the ball well. He did force a couple of balls he shouldn’t have, like a short hook to Jernigan after he failed to get separation from his defender. Need to go elsewhere on that play, but hey it’s the first game so I’ll let him slide. Next game not so much haha.
-Ware’s first couple of carries frustrated me, especially the one where he tried to bounce it back to the left and dance around for a short gain. Reminded me of Jacobs when he would start to tip toe and dance around in the backfield. He had at least 4-5 yards of space in front of him on the right side, and the line looked like it was pretty well set up past that so it could have gone for more. Not sure why he went lateral there? It may have been jitters and just trying to overdo it to impress the coaches because after that he seemed to settle down and run hard. Nice run before his touchdown, and good effort on the touchdown run as well.
-Brown had one lame excuse for a blocking attempt on a Carr sack.
-Wilson showed his explosiveness. To Ironmike his 26 yard run was in between the tackles, and he another run up the gut later on where he bounced off a would be tackler for couple additional yards. Not trying to nitpick just stating what I observed. Also I am huge Wilson fan, and let’s just say when his name was called in April I definitely pissed off some neighbors… So I may be a bit biased here haha. Got stuffed on a few runs, but the O-line didn’t help him out very much. Good kickoff returns although he probably should have just knelt in the endzone on his first return. Blame that again on trying to overdo it to make an impression. One negative I did see came on the Selvie sack in the third quarter. Selvie ran a stint to the inside on the play where he should have been chipped by Wilson before he ran his route except for the fact that Wilson missed him horribly on that play.
-Pass interference should have been called on the pass to Jernigan in the endzone. CB had his right arm tied down otherwise I think he makes the catch for 6 there. Other than that Jernigan was unimpressive. Still early, but he maybe another Sinorice, and IMO he provides no value on ST.
-Stanback one hand grab was amazing, but that was the only real thing I saw from him.
-Barden had a couple of nice plays, would have liked to see more from him.
-Randle looks like he is going to be a star in the near future. Nice adjustment on the touchdown, and if Carr throws a better pass to him earlier on the drive he had room the run. Good catch on a bad pass thrown behind him.
-Cruz is Cruz. Great run after the catch, but in typical Giant receiver fashion missed the easy catch. Those are the ones that get tipped up and picked off. Have to haul it in.
-If Pascoe doesn’t step up these next few games the Black Unicorn will be the starter come week one. Good game by Bennett. Very athletic and a tremendous game blocking.
-Boothe, Baas, Snee, and Diehl played well IMO. Hopefully Beatty comes back strong because our backups are terrible. After the first team line went out the O-line play went to hell.
Defense:
-The D-line seemed like they were ready to hit someone as they were jumping on what seemed like every play. Austin looks like a workout warrior to me just like when he was at UNC he got washed up on every play. He is two years removed from football so it may be a bit of rust, but I am disappointed in his play last night.
-Tracy made some nice plays. as well as Hendricks. With Bernard hurt, and Canty’s uncertainty he has a definite shot to make the roster to start the year at the very least. Made a statement as to why he should last night.
-Herz is our future at MLB. Played very fast and very smart last night, and if he keeps it up has a good shot to start week one IMO as Blackburn didn’t do anything last night. Great story, but even greater that he returned to the form that labeled him a top 10 pick before the cancer. Guess that means no need for Manti Te’o for us next april, which makes me sad because he is my fav player so far in next years draft.
-River’s was all over the place last night looking like a top 10 pick. Hopefully he keeps it up and pushes Kiwi for playing time. I think it’s time to admit that LBer may no longer be an area of weakness. Boley, Herz, and Kiwi/Rivers as the starters with Williams, Blackburn, Paysinger, and Jones as the primary back ups. Rough game for Jones last night though.
-Prince had a rough first series, but came back with a nice strip. Got to like the ability to come back and make up for bad plays.
-Hosley was as advertised on defense. Very tough, very scrappy, and should make a case for leaving Rolle at safety permanently. As for his returns I was not impressed you can’t muff a punt ever, especially that close to your own endzone. His one long return I also did not like all the dancing that he did there. It worked out on that play, but typically that’s a negative play. As they always say you can not run backwards. Also hopefully TT comes back which will allow us to have 4 very talented corners. Beyond that not really impressed by any of the corners. Janzen Jackson did not play well which disappoints me because I was excited to see him in action. Was happy we signed him, but he has not done anything in practice or the game to suggest he even deserves a spot on the practice squad.
-Hill made splashes, and I think he sticks on the roster as he is very athletic and definitely has the talent to be a playmaker at this level. One negative came on the long run by Toston. He had a chance to make a play to stop the run for about half the gain, but he overran Toston and when he tried to stop he slipped and fell down, but he came back the next play to stop Toston at the line of scrimmage which was nice to see. After the stop they showed him slapping his helmet in disgust which I think was he being upset still about missing the tackle the play before. Good to see he knows that he should have made the play, but have to have short memory. By that time would like to see him not thinking about the mistake and focusing on the next play.
*A note about the first defensive series is that this is the first preseason game so there is not a scouting report, a manila defensive scheme so I expected to see them giving up some plays. Looking forward to more consistent play as the preseason goes on.
As for the Jaguars Jennings and Robiskie looked impressive. Gabbert showed flashes for potential, but seems to be a bit gun shy. One play he had a man open long, but instead of standing up tall and making the throw with a player running free at him he just seemed to chuck the ball up and duck away from the hit. A couple other plays he seemed to tuck the ball and take his focus away from downfield. Have to stand tall there and he just didn’t seem to have the guts to do so. |
