I know, I know, wayyyyyy to early.

Was just thinking though that this upcoming draft is going to be crucial for the 9ers.

Priority #1 should be defense. This team is built on D, and for us to stay elite, we're going to need to have talent ready to go as some of our starters start to age or look for bigger contracts elsewhere.

I wouldn't mind picking up some substantial depth on the defensive side of the ball in the early rounds, especially on the D-Line, CB and S positions (think we are good at the linebacker position for now)

Offensive positions I think we can completely neglect in the draft are:

1. QB - Alex and Kap are both long term answers
2. RB - Hunter and LMJ are great as far as the future goes
3. WR - Crabs and Jenkins (assuming he plays up to his 1st round potential) should be solid, plus, maybe Manningham re-signs in a few years

Offensive positions we should look at

1. Guard - would be nice to have another mauler at the position
2. OT - How much longer does Staley have? He seems to be regressing
3. TE - I don't want to see Delanie Walker on the field ever again

What are you guys looking for?

Safety if Goldson leaves. DL depth and future. OLB depth.

Maybe we draft a LT, ask Staley to lose some weight and play TE. Wink

Agreed that we don't need to look for a QB. I think even Tolzien could be an answer if needed down the line. However, RB and WR I'm not sure on. A short-yardage back would be nice to pair with Hunter/James longterm, as I don't think Jacobs will be around for very long (plus, it remains a question how effective he will be/needs to be). And as far as WR goes, if the right guy is there, it certainly won't hurt to have him paired up with the aforementioned Crabtree and Jenkins (especially since regardless of what some think, Jenkins is an unknown quantity in its entirety). A center is the most glaring of all needs I think most would or should agree on, but constantly drafting all linemen to always have someone to step in when the time comes for others to leave will be important. So if the right tackle/guard/center comes up later in the draft, picking them up would be the right call. Especially tackle - we probably want someone who is not starting to be a backup tackle at some point.

As for defense - a big defensive end would be something I'd love to look into if the right guy is there (to replace Justin Smith while Smith could still teach him his amazing work ethic), but the staff seems pretty comfortable with RJF, Dobbs, and Tukuafu in that department. As for linebacker, a middle linebacker is going to be near a necessity in my view, possibly even early. Bowman may be way too pricy to keep around especially as the perennial second fiddle to Willis, and Grant is most likely not going to stick around much either as he'll likely find decent money to go elsewhere (remember - teams are REALLY going to start coveting our defensive backups as starting solutions). Outside linebackers are equally question marks because we don't know what Flemming is going to offer once he's healthy, and after that we have...nothing. Haralson's career with the 49ers is essentially over unless he really likes the team and wants to be a backup (which I cannot imagine a player wanting).

CB depth (to get rid of Brock mainly) is all I think we'd need this year. Rogers/Brown/Culliver should be solid up top for a while, and even Cox seems to be useful. Safety depth or potentially a starting FS if we can't afford Goldson will definitely be needed. I like Spiller, but not sure if he's going to ever be the guy, and Robinson - it's hard to say.

Assuming we retain all starters, this is what I'd be looking for in order. If we cannot (see FS/NT), obviously that'll change:

C - Replace Goodwin/Compete with Kilgore

DE - Eventually take over for J. Smith/take roster spot for Tukuafu or Dobbs (like both - but always need to improve)

T - Primary backup/maybe compete for starting job if necessary

FS - Compete with Robinson/Spiller

OLB - Compete with Fleming/Cam Johnson for primary backup role

MLB - Replace Larry Grant/Primary backup/Maybe groom for Bowman leaving due to being overly expensive

WR - Depth/Push Kyle Williams for roster spot/Take over if Moss/Manningham both leave

TE - Replace Walker & Celek/Better option

NT - Compete with or even replace Ian Williams for depth/Maybe overtake RJF & Williams as the future at the position

CB - Replace Brock/Compete with Cox & Culliver for extensive playing time

RB - Short-yardage back/Replace Brandon Jacobs

CENTER! That's it y2. That's what was lingering in the back of my mind and really wanted to stress. We NEED a CENTER more than anything else.

See, if you kept it in the center of your mind you would have been fine. What's it doing in the back anyway?

It got pushed in the back by a victory over the Packers.

I doubt Werner lasts till the end of the first. He's one of the best of a great passrusher draft class.

I'd really want some d-line depth in this draft. we have a lot of late round picks this upcoming year, so i think that's going to be excellent for plugging in depth on the o-line (plenty of quality interior lineman can be had in the middle rounds...i'm still mad that we did not take michael brewster this year and instead chose slowey) and adding something on the d-line.

On offense, I'd like to add some more wide outs...i'm not super big on aj jenkins yet, and i'm concerned that palmer disappeared in the preseason games until number 4. running back isn't a major concern. we'll probably need a back up tight end because i don't know if walker will be back.

I think we'll also need some safety help. something tells me goldson isn't coming back. I think with where we are picking, there are two things we can do...trade down, which i don't think is a horrific idea if we are picking 30-32, or take bpa on defense. I'd really like to get tj mcdonald if we can. this would be my draft need power rankings depending on who's available when we draft.

1. Tj mcdonald...I really like this kid. if he's available, right now, he's my draft favorite. fits a need and he's good.

2. d-line depth. william gholston wouldn't be a bad selection, and if hankins fell that far, I'd snap him up in an instant in the first.

3. secondary help - I love mcdonald, so i'm hoping we take him if he's available, but there are plenty of gifted cb's and safeties available late in the first.

4. wide receiver - manningham is only on a 2 year deal, and there's no telling how long moss will be effective. crabtree is what he is, and while he's effective, i don't think he's a #1. I prefer to take wide outs in the middle rounds (2/3 - 5/6). in this range, i'd like to look at. Marquess Wilson has the height i really like, though he's a little on the smaller side weight wise. If justin turner fell to late in the second due to injury concern, i'd like to take a chance on him. In the later rounds, i'd look at smaller school wide outs like Quinton Patton from la tech, and conner vernon from duke.

5. interior offensive line - center in particular. I have not been impressed with jonathan goodwin, and kilgore is an unknown who will need competition. The only time i like taking interior offensive line in the upper rounds is when there's a 'can't miss' type guy...nick mangold, iupati, people like that. otherwise i'm content to take one in the middle rounds of 3-6. I like dalton freeman (has been a starter every year in college i believe), but he's a little smaller and athletic, not typical of the 49ers o-line philosophy. Graham Pocic would probably fit our philosophy little better. I think we should probably add another guard too...just in case Davis struggles at tackle and boone shifts over. James wilson at florida may be someone worth taking a look at.

I doubt Werner lasts till the end of the first. He's one of the best of a great passrusher draft class.
But we do have at least eleven picks this year as ammo to move up... What are your thoughts on Barrett Jones at C? I know these early mocks can be way off but I see him mid to late first in most of them. Didn't get a chance to see the Bama/Michigan game but I read he did very well especially considering he's playing yet again a new position.

the funny thing is I wanted to trade Delanie Walker for a decent pick early last year or was it the year before, and I agree with finding a future LT, Staley has been solid for us up till now, but he seems to be dropping off some(might be the fact that our OL was so bad that Staley looked really good in comparison)

I honestly think finding a safety to groom wouldn't be as hard as people think for us, as long as we keep our coaches in that department here.

There's no way we trade Bowman imo. I think we'll try everything to re-sign him and franchise him at least once if we can't come to an agreement.

Think you guys have it nailed down pretty well. These would be my top wants right about now.

- WR { With Mario, Crabtree, and Kyle W going into 2013, that's not a bad group, but I still don't see that stud WR that will demand extra coverage. Looks like a good year for snatching up a tall and skilled WR in rd 1-2 }

- C { Goodwin is still not impressing, but he doesn't completely suck. Still, we can save a chunk of cap room moving on from him after this season. Hopeful that Kilgore can be ready to go after another full offseason, but we can draft a rd 2-4 C prospect to challenge and compete }

- OLB { Pretty clear we need help here. I like Cam Johnson's chances of developing, but no point in relying so strongly on him. }

- OT { Not sure right now what our plan is at OT if an injury occurs to Staley or AD. I don't see anyone other than Boone that I'd feel comfy with moving into that LT spot. }

- TE { Getting pretty tired of Walker and would rather not re-sign him. Short and often brick-handed. We can do better at # 2 TE }

* can definitely see the case for early drafted FS.. and while I do think Goldson will walk, I really think Fangio can get a lot out of our other or younger safeties.

* I feel good about our chances to re-sign either Sopoaga or RJF. So not worried about NT if that happens. One of Sopo/RJF with Ian Williams as backup would be solid, IMO.
