Well the vid itself doesn't deserve it's own thread, but talk about his injury, progress, and return certainly deserves to go somewhere. _________________

Cant be Stopped. Wont be Stopped.
Adidas did a good job taking advantage of a bad situation here. This whole return series was a great idea and is being done very well. |

The fact that you don't think it's good just shows how good it is. _________________

If I had a team that had no stars or nobody capable of scoring, then yes, I'd love to have him and his inefficiency. If I had a pretty good team with another star and above average player, then no, I wouldn't want him. Rose is like an Allen Iverson - a guy who needs the ball, very rarely looks to pass, and is a chucker. No thanks. _________________

What's good about that commercial is that it takes an element of sports that we commonly see when a star player goes down and builds a commercial... rather an event around it.
When Brian Cushing went down, I'd bet Houston fans were holding their breathe hoping for the best. In the past whenever Andrew Bynum would go down with an injury, LA fans would hope it wasn't THE knee injury that would do him and their season in. Think about when Tom Brady went down with the ACL injury in 08', same with Manning in 11'. The hopes of those fans were crushed... frozen into space, waiting for a time when they can hope once again.
When Derrick Rose went down in the playoffs last year, the Chicago Bulls instantly went from Championship Contender that had a legitimate case for being in the conversation with the Heat and Thunder- to overmatched squad with no hope of pushing through.
This commercial takes place in the moments directly after Rose goes down where Bulls fans are frozen, wondering what this could mean for their team's future in these playoffs, wondering if it made their 2011 season almost worthless if Rose is done, wondering if indeed Rose was done.
And the thing is, the true beauty is that while the world continues to move on, while the Heat went onto win a Championship... the hopes of those Bulls fans froze as their best player went down... and those hopes will stay frozen until he returns.
This commercial somehow put into focus the feelings that all fans have when their best players go down... and it frames it into a story of hope, of struggle, of courage. Turned it into a heroes tale.
With each strain of effort that Rose puts into his rehab, the hopes of the fans return life to this world of dreams; with each slap of weights, consciousness arrives to the bewildered; with each sound of struggle, the world receives a renewed vigor.
And what makes it far superior to the Patrick Willis viral video (wouldn't really call it a commercial) is that it's not simply about telling an inspirational story. It's a story of inspiration that puts the relationship between the sport and the fans into perspective. It does all of that while showering you with brand Adidas. One could watch the vast majority of that Duracell video for Willis and not know that it's a video promoting batteries (what?), but you watch this Rose commercial and you see a guy wearing Adidas basketball tennis in his car dazed, you see a kid with a fire hydrant splattering water onto him... wear Adidas shoes. You see a group of teen ballers on the court ALL wearing Adidas shoes. You see multiple close ups of Rose's signature shoe while he's training his tail off. And then you have a solid 2 seconds of air time devoted just for displaying the Adidas emblem.
This commercial is brand building at its finest... and to think it does all of this without using anything, but voice overs from the game telecast where Rose goes down- a sequence that lasts less than 5 seconds. It does it with silence and passion. This is the greatest brand building commercial I've seen since the Old Spice "Man Your Man Could Smell Like" Commercial from the 2010' Winter Olympics. It's about basketball, it's about sports, it's about players, it's about fans. What this commercial is saying is that those subscribing to brand Adidas have a personal relationship to the game- a respect and love for it. It's truly brilliant IMO. I saw this on TV and I was immediately in awe. _________________
