No, Payton COULD'VE walked away. The clause stated he had the option too, not he was forced too. This whole situation is ridiculous and if Payton walks, the Saints as a franchise are back to the paper bag days for the foreseeable future.
I'm not sure you understand how financial decisions work. A player or coach is always going to void their contract when they can when its advantageous to them, in this situation it would be extremely advantageous to Payton to void it b/c he can force Benson into a bidding war w/ Jerry Jones.

Yeah. I get that, I was explaining that the clause was IF Mickey Loomis was fired or suspended Sean Payton COULD walk away, not that he is forced too.

And even with this contract voided, that situation remains the same. Having the option, he would have been foolish NOT to void it before, given the leverage it would give him on a new deal, but either way it works out to the same situation. He is a coach without a contract heading in to the future who is neither committed to the returning to the Saints, or obligated to look elsewhere.

He's not forced to now, he could sign a new deal w/ the Saints either way you would have ended up in this exact situation.

Void a contract with language that basically creates a little 2 person sub union package? Of course the league can. It sets a fangerous precedence where a coach could void his contract at any point if something negative happens to his boss. Loomis and Payton basically could have named any ridiculous amount of money they wanted and Benson would have had to pay them it under a deal where either could void at any point if the other left.

I am not saying they acted in collusion but its pretty self explanatory why the league voided a contract with a clause like Payton's had. He'll resign a vi tract with the same team, same money and absent the clause as soon as he is allowed to.

To clarify my point of why the NFL voided the contract. They voided it because the contract can only contain terms with the New Orleans Saints. The contract can not be influenced or contingent upon working for Mickey Loomis as Loomis is not an approved entity of the NFL. Thete is no New Orleans Mickey Loomis'.

Paytons voided deal had language that allowed him to void based on factors outside the Saints control and was therefore invalid.
