Clearly Watt! Obviously just a beast at whatever he is needed to do for his team and mates!!
ClayMaker is defintely second! Isn't as good as a passrusher as Miller/Aldon Smith but is pretty darn good at everything else especially knowing who started opposite of him.
Justin Smith
Jared Allen

It is remarkable Clay had as many sacks as he did missing 4 games this year. _________________

From a 49ers fan's perspective, I wouldn't trade Justin Smith for JJ Watt. They're different players, and the way that Smith plays is what keeps the 49ers' defense together as an elite unit. Watt makes more splash plays, and would be more valuable to pretty much any other team in the league, but for San Francisco there isn't a defensive player I'd trade single handedly for Smith (without taking age into consideration).
That said;
1. Watt
2. Smith
3. Long
4. Matthews
5. Allen
With the last three being pretty damn close to each other. _________________

If we're talking right now, then Watt without a doubt. I think that Allen in his prime (up until this year pretty much) was right on par with Watt right now. Different skill sets, Watt gets a lot of glory because of the swatting whereas Allen had just about the quietest season one could have for coming within one sack of the record. I also think Allen was just a little better against the run. _________________

No way in HELL is Allen better against the run. Watt is the best run defender in the league by a good margin IMO. |

Are we talking about just for one year? Or going forward?
Watt is the answer regardless but I would probably take CMIII #2 over Justin Smith if we're talking about going forward. If we're talking about just 1 year, then Justin Smith is #2 for me... |

I think that's a bit of a stretch. You putt JJ Watt on the 49ers, and it's nearly impossible to realistically believe in any kind of dropoff. Just because he might not fill the exact role Smith does, that doesn't mean they're worse off because of it. You can easily work around that with the talent San Francisco has. _________________

Hmmm... now outside of being pass rushers, what do all five of these guys have in common? _________________

1. Watt
2. Smith
3. Allen (why is everyone dropping him so much..?)
4. Matthews (one of the most overrated pass rushers/ defenders in the game imo)

5. Chris Long | Why is Matthews overrated? Are you just looking at sack numbers? Because he is consistently in the top in terms of pressures, even during his 6 sack season. And he is one of the best run defenders in the league. He had a bad game against Kaep in terms of contain but that is not the norm for him. He's always great to elite in coverage. Not seeing where he's overrated unless your strictly grade pass rushers on sacks. _________________

J.J. Watt and it's not even close. As the poll indicates. _________________

No way in HELL is Allen better against the run. Watt is the best run defender in the league by a good margin IMO. | No he isn't. He is the best interior DL against the pass (both rushing and batting down passes) by a good margin. He is in the very murky discussion about quite a few great run defenders in the NFL on the DL. That said I agree he is better in that regard than Jared Allen. I think very highly of Allen as an overall DL, but against the run he is not amongst the very best in football. _________________
